What memory do i need ?

My old faithful 5 year old computer finally died last week and i had to purchase a new one to chatch up with the rest of the world. I have been using G.skill DDR in that machine and would like to stick with G.skill when i add more memory to this new machine. It is a Gateway DX4850-27EU, can you please suggest what G.skill memory modules i should use

Believe that comes w/ 6GB DDR3 1333, 2x2GB and 2x1GB (sort of a ridiculous combo)? How much total are you looking for? If 8Gb I'd go with a 2X4GB set, you could try add a 2x2GB to replace the 2X1GB, but could well run into problems mixing DRAM from different manufacturers. So, first you'll have to decide how much total you'll want to run

What do you think would be a magic number ? We plan to use it for photo editing and general internet stuff. The video uses the ram memory.

To be honest, I think I'd see how you do with it as is, did it come w/ 6GB? That would have been a step up wasn't it? Seem to remember you on the boards a few times, about this time or later last year?

Anyway, if it is 6, I'd try that, then maybe look into a 2x4GB set which would give you *GB min, and might (operative word there 'might'), even work with one of the two sets that's currently installed, which could give you 10 or 12GB......regardless you'd have 8 and if the old don't work, 2 empty slots where you could add more in the future.

Might take a look at the 1333 Sniper set, 2x4GB

Have used these on a couple of boxes and have added a second set of same to run them to 16GB w/ no problem.

Thanks, yes it does have 6gb and this machine runs like a Ferrari compared to the old system. I will see how things go

Keep in touch...and keep a eye on the system, as you add programs you'll start adding icons in the lower right of your task bar, each of those take a little RAM, a good program to manage that area is called WinPatrol - it's easier than MSCONFIG to disable those startups and reenable them. Keeps your free DRAM...Free

Tradesman, system has been working ok so far so i have held off on purchasing any new memory. I have discovered how to make my graphics run faster, there are two settings in my bios that i made some changes from the default settings. Under video memory i have 64mb (default) and 128mb, i set this to 128 mb. Under DVMT i have three settings 128mb, 256mb (default) and maximum, i set this to maximum and with windows 7 and all its eye candy turned on all the graphic pages on my web boards, ebay, the wifes farm ville and face book open much faster. I did open the computer to see just what type of memory gateway installed in this computer, did not remove them from the MB, just looked at the stickers. There was nothing to identify the brand on the stickers but the chips were Elpida. So i guess it will be a crap shoot if i wish to just add to this memory replacing the 1gb sticks with 4gb sticks.

I think my earlier suggestion stands the 1333 Snipers (1.5 volt version, CL9, model #F3-10666CL9D-8GBSR) in 2x4GB. that'll kick you to an immediate 8GB and can prob run the 2x2 set you have with them (had a chance to really play with the Snipers and they are extremely versatile so that would provide a better chance of working with the existing sticks)...and then later when you get tired of 12 GB or set a bunch of it in a RAM drive and decide you need 16GB, you can simply add another set of Snipers. The 2x4GB set is currently available at the Egg for $80 w/ free shipping.

Went to neweggs site to order a set of 1333 Snipers but thought i would read some of the reviews. It seems like people have been having a rash problems lately so i have held off until gskill sorts things out. I am not having any problems with the ram in my computer not, sure don't want to remove them and install the Snipers and start getting BSOD's

They should work okay...not really familiar with this particular set, and therefore can't really offer any advice as to compatibility or how they might with other different (your current) sticks.......sorry bout that

As always Tman i greatly appreciate your advice. I thought these might match up with my generic sticks, also i have looked at my bios ( Acer) thought they only made cheep computers, and there are no options to adjust the memory or voltage. I had this problem with my eMachine after i lost my Biostar motherboard and had to go back to the original that came in the computer. This is when i sold my Corsair and OCZ sticks and purchased the G.skill they did not need any adjustments to work stable
