  • 8 to 16GB expansion for ASUS Sabertooth 990FX

I wish to expand my Sabertooth (AMD "Thuban" Phenom II X6 1090T).
    Now I have a F3-12800CL7-8GBRH kit (2 x 4GB), set at 1600 MHz, CL7-8-7-21-28, CR1, 1.6V.
Here in Italy I haven't found the same kit. It disappeared...!
Can you suggest a possible alternative to this kit? Can I mix different products but with similar timings?
I have another question: will I have to relax my actual timings? I know that AMD IMCs are a lot critical in stability when used with 4 RAM modules...

Mixing any sets can be problematic, especially with AMD, best bet would be a single 16GB set, and would suggest if going 1600 look to a CL8 or CL9 set, AMD's have weaker MCs compared to Intel so especially when you look at stressing the MC wih 4 sticks, better to go with a looser CL, not sure if you could run CL7 w/ 4 sticks

      Higher clocks?

      And what about a single 2 x 8 GB kit at 1866?
      Like the F3-1866C10D-16GSR?
Another option: a 2133 MHz kit like the F3-2133C9D-16GXH (maybe downlclocked to 1866 at CL8)?
I know that my Sabertooth 990FX is capable of running modules up to 1866, and I'm planning to buy a future FX-8350 (that will directly support that frequency).
      Any suggestions?
      Thanks a lot,
      Leonardo.

Those both sound like good options, will want to make sure you have the latest BIOS, two sticks will also be less stress on the MC

Thank you! Now my only doubt is real compatibility.
I know that the official ASUS QVL list cannot report all compatible memory modules, but I'm wondering if my Sabertooth 990FX is really capable of running the F3-2133C9D-16GXH kit at 1866 MHz. I haven't found any report/review/test about that..

With the 8350 in mind, would be able to even drop to 1600 if needed with the 1090

I found several very good reviews of the Trident X F3-2400C10D-16GTX kit, so I ordered it.
With Intel IMCs seems to run very well.
              Frequency/Voltage/Latency scaling (review from OCHAOLIC)
I'm not aiming at such good results. My only goal is low latency and stability at 1600 MHz, maybe at 1866 if possible..
The kit is planned to arrive next week. I have updated my Sabertooth 990FX to the latest BIOS (1304). Trident X models not shown in QVL list, so.. Finger crossed!
              I'll post my results here.

                  My F3-2400C10D-16GTX arrived!
                  Installed.
                  Flawlessly set at 1600 MHz, CL7-8-8-21-28 CR1T, 1.6V.
Seems very stable (tested with Memtest86+ and OCCT, HyperPI, Prime95 for several hours).

                  HWiNFO64 snapshot:

I tried to set the kit at 1866 MHz too, with CL9-9-9-24 1T, but speed results were almost identical, so I preferred to run at 1600 MHz. All CPU and CPU/NB voltages are at Auto, northbridge is set to 2800 MHz. Only a little CPU overclock (3400 MHz).

                      Some other good news.
I mixed the 16 GB kit (F3-2400C10D-16GTX) with my previous Ripjaws F3-12800CL7-8GBRH 8 GB kit.
Now they're running together at 1.6V, and my system is stable as a rock!
                      Here are the timings:

Thanks to my CPU and my mainboard, but first of all, to these sublime G.Skill kits!
