  • F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH 8GB and GA-MA790XT-UD4P

    Code:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P with latest Bios F7
    Memory: 2x GSKILL F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH (8GB)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
I'm not able to run all four sticks (8gb) stable in the given
configuration. Though the system is running smooth with two sticks
(4gb). I already swapped the sticks to eliminate the possibility of
    faulty sticks.

The system is running on linux and I use a prime stress test and memtest86+ to check the ram.

I already tried the following settings in the BIOS with no luck yet:

    Code:
    DDR3 Voltage Control 1.65V
    CPU NB VID Control 1.35V
    Memory Clock x6.66 1333MHz
    DCTs Mode Unganged
    CAS# latency 9T
RAS to CAS R/W Delay 9T
    Row Precharge Time 9T
    Minimum RAS Active Time 24T
    1T/2T Command Timing 2T
    TwTr Command Delay 5T
    Trfc0 for DIMM1 300ns
    Trfc2 for DIMM2 300ns
    Trfc1 for DIMM3 300ns
    Trfc3 for DIMM4 300ns
    Write Recovery Time 10T
    Precharge Time 5T
    Row Cycle Time 33T
    RAS to RAS Delay 4T
So far I was not able to get a stable system with 8gb, no matter what
settings I try. Running with 4gb is pretty easy, I can actually use
    stronger timings such as 7-7-7-21.

What else could I try to achieve a stable 8gb system?

I will Try to help you a bit here, Put in the timings that are on the sticker on your ram, the rest at auto. Trfc should be 160ns, sb/htvoltage at 1.4 Keep ddr voltage at 1.65 like you have it. This will get you where you should be able to run 8gigs.

      Hi RQuallsJR,

I just tried your recommended settings but with no luck. I set DDR3 voltage to 1.65 and SB to 1.4 but didn't change cpu nb vid. The RAM is supposed to work at 7-7-7-21 so I set those settings as well. Below is a summary of my settings.

      Code:
      DDR3 Voltage Control 1.65V
      SouthBridge Volt Control 1.4V
      Memory Clock x6.66 1333MHz
      DCTs Mode Unganged
      CAS# latency 7T
RAS to CAS R/W Delay 7T
      Row Precharge Time 7T
      Minimum RAS Active Time 21T
      1T/2T Command Timing 2T
      TwTr Command Delay 5T
      Trfc0 for DIMM1 160ns
      Trfc2 for DIMM2 160ns
      Trfc1 for DIMM3 160ns
      Trfc3 for DIMM4 160ns
      Write Recovery Time 10T
      Precharge Time 5T
      Row Cycle Time 33T
      RAS to RAS Delay 4T
I think I'll try to loosen the timings a bit. Any more suggestions?

With the Ripjaws tou may have to give more voltage to the CPU/MC and oC the system to get all 8 running stable...also may have to move the tRFC back to 300 where you had it. AMD CPUs don't deal well with with fast RAM beyond 4 GB

Pls offer comments on support I provide, HERE, in order to help me do a better job here:

I just altered my settings and was able to get the system stable. I overclocked the CPU NB VID and vastly loosened the timings.

          Code:
          DDR3 Voltage Control 1.65V
          SouthBridge Volt Control 1.4V
          CPU NB VID Control 1.35V
          Memory Clock x6.66 1333MHz
          DCTs Mode Unganged
          CAS# latency 9T
RAS to CAS R/W Delay 9T
          Row Precharge Time 9T
          Minimum RAS Active Time 24T
          1T/2T Command Timing 2T
          TwTr Command Delay 5T
          Trfc0 for DIMM1 300ns
          Trfc2 for DIMM2 300ns
          Trfc1 for DIMM3 300ns
          Trfc3 for DIMM4 300ns
          Write Recovery Time 10T
          Precharge Time 5T
          Row Cycle Time 33T
          RAS to RAS Delay 4T
It's great to see them working now but I'm not totally satisfied with those lame timings. Maybe I'll try and tweak them some more.

            Rejoyed to soon...

After 3 days of stable working with the settings below, the prime test failed again.

What else could I do? I think I'll try to down-clock the RAM to 1066 MHz.

I just realized that I'm affected by AMD's Erratum 379 because my CPU is unfortunately in Stepping C2.

So I just down clocked to 1066 MHz but still no luck. I get more and more the feeling that there is some kind of incompatibility between MB/CPU/RAM. Are there any more adjustment screws to turn?

I guess that some of us already have the latest stepping C3 which is able to handle 8gb @1333 MHz. I'd be lucky if I can run my 8gb stable @1066 Mhz.

Right now my 8gb *are* running stable @1066 MHz but the next time I power off my system and turn it on again, I might have an unstable system. Pretty weird...

                            Thanks a lot, RQuallsJR!

What do you mean by "SB/HT=1.400v"? I can just set NB, SB and CPU NB VID...

Anyway, will try your advice by loading defaults and setting your values.
