  • 4 RAM sticks in a passive PC

    Hi,

    I'm considering buying G.Skill DDR2 8GB(4x2GB) PC800 PI CL4.

My PC is nearly passive. It has only one low-rpm fan inside the PSU.

    Everything stock speed, no OC.

I wonder if G.Skill 4 ram sticks won't overheat without additional airflow when put close together.

Now I have 2x1GB Patriot PC6400 LLK. They are very hot. I can't hold fingers on it for more than 2-3 secs.
I have found on the web that 4x2GB Patriot set overheats in similar passive PCs.
That's why I'm looking for ram with lower operating temperature. I do not want to install additional fans.
Please advise if 4x2GB G.Skill PC6400 PI (no OC) will work stable in such a hostile environment

    My config:
    1. GA-P35C-DS3R rev. 1.1
    2. Intel E6600 + ThermalRight-Ultra 120 cooler (w/o fan)
    http://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-U.../dp/B000PHEV6C
    3. PSU BeQuiet StraightPower 550W
    4. Patriot DDR2 PC6400 800MHz 2x1GB LLK CL4
    5. Case Chieftec Dragon miditower DX-01-B-D-U
    http://www.chieftec.eu/index.php?opt...=76&Itemid=275
    6. No fans except the one inside PSU = almost no active airflow inside the case.

    Regards,
    Artur

Don't want you to think your being ignored, but I'll leave this for GSkill, I myself would strongly recommend adding some airflow if going to 4 sticks, you've got a good heatsink, but the 6600 is going to throw a lot of heat, even at stock speed and it's going to be dissipating right by the RAM. They'll be in Monday for sure and may well drop in over the weekend.

      OK, thanks.

Let's consider additional 120mm fan in the back as an option.
Probably it'd be better to add 80mm fan in the front but I do not have any spare 80mm fan at this moment.

I have installed spare 120mm Noctua fan working @530rpm (fixed speed).
At this speed it's inaudible (that's my priority).

      http://www.silentpcreview.com/article695-page4.html

Now temperatures shown in Everest are as follows:
IDLE (max temps observed during 1hr)
      CPU - 27C (81F)
      SYSTEM - 41C (106F)
      HDD SAMSUNG HD321KJ - 28C (82F)
      HDD WDC WD6400AAKS - 34C (93F)
Graphics card - Gigabyte GeForce NVidia 7600GT passive (no fan) - 57C (135F)

LOAD (max temps observed during 1hr Everest tests)
      CPU - 46C (115F)
      SYSTEM - 43C (109F)
Gigabyte GeForce NVidia 7600GT (max temp observed during playing Need For Speed Shift for 20min / med details - 78C (172F)

I have also done a quick temps "check" by touching components surface...and here is a very simplified "heat map" of my PC.

So I wonder if 4 sticks of G.Skill PI will work stable in my PC.
      - with 120mm fan
      - without additional fan assuming that temperatures are bit higher than reported above (fan works @530 rpm only)

I would prefer the second option.

I think that without 120mm fan most of the heat generated by CPU goes up through the ThermalRight monster cooler freely (vertical aluminium plates, no obstacles inside). Then it's thrown away by PSU fan.

When I put my hand between CPU cooler and RAM sticks I can't feel much heat.

      Please advise.

      Regards,
      Artur

I think you'd be okay with the PIs

You should have no problems at all. Simply set the memory settings, and possibly raise the MCH Core by 0.1V and everything should be fine.

          Thank you

                Hi,

I decided to buy 2x2GB first to check if it works ok on my mobo and if temps are ok. Then I am going to buy another set of 2x2GB.

I have got 2 ram sticks (F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI) 2 days ago and tested it on my GA-P35C-DS3R rev 1.1.

When I put in a single stick only it passes memtest without problems (4-4-4-12, 5-5-5-15@1.9V, MCH +0.1V as recommended)

But when both sticks are put together (dual channel) memtest reports errors and sometimes hangs up

I have following options in my BIOS (version F12).
                http://xs.to/image-54CD_4B996A61.jpg

I also tested 4-4-4-12@2.1V as specified on the ram stick label but memtest still reports errors.

Could you please advise what to change to get it work properly ?

If sticks are not working ok (mobo incompability) I can send it back within next 5 days.

                Regards,
                Artur

Did you install them in the yellow or orange slots? Try using the other two. If you continue to have issues, you my have bad motherboard. If both modules work fine individually, they should have no problems operating together.

As far as settings, simply set the DRAM frequency, timings, and voltage, everything should run just fine.

                  Thank you
