Hi,
I've been having some PC issues and I'm not sure if it's been me creating them or not.
Basically I have built and rebuilt my own PC. Originally it was when the AMD Dual Core CPU's came out and recently the motherboard died, so I decided I would go back to intel and get an i7 CPU which obviously meant getting a new motherboard and RAM. Initially I installed windows 7 32bit running with 4gb RAM and the PC was running pretty good.
Recently I decided it was time to go to Windows 7 64bit and get more out of the PC. I use Opera as my main browser and it does chew through a bit of memory, often as much as 2gb on my previous setup and it would crash. So that was a major reason to go to 64bit and that's when I decided to up the RAM and make use of it. I decided to buy the G.Skill F3-10666CL9-8GBXL x 2 packets, meaning 32gb RAM.
Now I must admit, I don't know a lot about RAM, I think I've learnt more just browsing here than anywhere else. I basically bought that RAM because it said "DDR3 and PC-10666/1333" and I thought yep that's compatible. Originally I was thinking 16gb, then I thought it was a good price so I may as well get the maximum I can get, which was 4 x 8gb
Now back to the problems I'm having with the PC. I don't think it was running as well as it should be. I would run video programs and they would take a lot longer to encode and process compared to what they were on the 32bit 4gb Ram system. I couldn't work out why that was the case. I also thought it was time to upgrade my video card as the previous one was 512mb and I decided to go to a 2gb with CUDA capabilities thinking that might help speed things up.
I think the new video card was possibly a major reason why the PC is running like crap now. I tried to install the video card without uninstalling the previous ones drivers, I got a blue screen and then decided to try a few days later and finally getting it to work, but I think the drivers may be screwed up as nVidia driver installed an audio driver and the sound is crap now... tried to uninstall drivers and re-install, but system is now going for about 20 mins and virtually grinds to a halt. It's that slow and I've tried various spyware/virus/trojan/malware.....etc tools to see if there is something infecting the machine, but anything it picked up was minor. I also did a memtest86+ which didn't show any errors. I think I'll just have to wipe the system and start again.
So this brings me to asking, some questions about my RAM and it's setup.
1. Is my RAM compatible with the motherboard and CPU?
2. Are the RAM settings ok based on CPU-Z or how should they be setup in they aren't right.
I figure I need to know and understand this before I possibly make the same mistakes, or maybe it isn't set up right and making the right adjustments might go a long way to fixing my problems.
Below are images I have taken from CPU-Z and the different settings.
