  • Asus p9x79 deluxe and g-skill ripjawsx f3-14900cl9q-16gbxl configuration

I had been using the following system build:

    CPU: core i7-3930K
Motherboard: ASUS P9X79 deluxe (BIOS updated to 1203)
RAM: G-Skill RipjawsX F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL (4X4GB, 1600 Mhz, 9-9-9-28, XMP). the 4 RAM Sticks are installed as per ASUS recommendation (A1, B1, C1, D1) for quad channel.
    Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H80
    Graphics: MSI NVIDIA GTX560

With ASUS auto tuner, the CPU overclocks to perhaps 3.91 Ghz. However, without asus auto tuner and only XMP enabled, it is unstable. As a result, I have using the 40-42 multiplier to overclock to 4-4.2 Ghz.

    However, I have recently ordered G-Skill RipjawsX G-Skill F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL (XMP), 1866 Mhz, 4*4GB, 9-10-9-28, 1.5V.

I would like to seek help in achieving these objectives:
    1. moderate overclock of i7-3930K to 4.2-4.4 GHz (4.2 Ghz would be perfectly acceptable)
    2. getting RAM to its rated speed of 1866 Mhz or at least something more than the previous 1600MHz. The key is that I am replacing 1600 Mhz with 1866 Mhz with expectations of some tangible benefit).
    3. keeping everything as much on default as possible.
    4. controllable temps (I stay in Delhi, India where summer peak temps cross 110F (45C) and winter temps are around 60F (15-20C).

One small related question: Will asus auto tuner get me better results with 1866 Mhz RAM than the 3.91 GHz achieved on 1600 Mhz. Also, is XMP more or less ruled out with 4 sticks

Please help and thanks a lot.

You say you want to overclock CPU and memory, then you want to keep everything default.. luckily, I get it.

First, set up the memory properly with XMP. Make sure it is stable with CPU default, AUTO settings.

Once you do that, then you can raise CPU Ratio and CPU VCore to test CPU overclock. Once you do that, you're done. Cooling is fine, so you don't need to worry about temps.

I'd suggest you read some guides like the one in our overclocking section to get a better idea of everything. We can provide pointers, but that's all.

    Thank you

Sorry if I did not express it properly. What I meant that I wish to achieve CPU overclock of 4.2 GHz and RAM rated speed of 1866 Mhz with as little change as possible. I think this low target would not be too hard to achieve, only that I do not know exactly how to do it properly.

With the 1866 sticks, simply enable XMP and select the 1866 profile...you are at 1866, then raise the CPU multiplier to 4.2 or whatever you want and you're there

Thanks. I will try XMP, see where it gets me with regard to CPU, and then clock it to 4.1-4.2Ghz. XMP was not too great on Gskill 1600 Mhz with 4 sticks. Hope it is better on 1866 Mhz.

If this does not work stable, i will try ASUS auto tuner and see where it goes for memory and CPU. If that is not what I want, I will post here with the results.

Thanks for now and have a good day.

Let us know, might also check if any problem and check your BIOS version

BIOS is the latest and in fact updated only last week. I am extremely grateful for all the help and would post with my results and problems, if any.

OK, I got this delivered today and plan to install it later in the day (AM US time or noon GMT, 29 June). The packing is of 16GB in 4 GB sticks. I suppose XMP will then work better??. The previous sticks were in 2 packets of 8 GB each.

Yes, XMP should work, the settings for XMP are programmed into the SPD of the sticks , so if you have two sets of two the advanced timings on each set may have say a tRFC of 86 while a 4 stick set may need a tRFC of like 171, with the single set the tRFC will actually be for 4 sticks

I have enabled XMP Profile 1 in the BIOS and set the CPU multiplier to 40

CPU is now 4 GHz and RAM is now showing at
                      933.3 Mhz or 1867 Mhz
                      FSB: DRAM is 1 :14
                      9-10-9-28
                      trfc: 160 clocks

I am not too technically savvy in these matters. As an alternative, can I also do this:

If I load optimised defaults, MB shows RAM as 1600 Mhz.
In ASUS AI Tweaker, I can then do manual (the options are auto/manual/XMP), set multiplier to 41-42 (4.1-4.2Ghz) and set memory profile as DDR3-1866 Mhz (instead of auto).

                          Will this also work properly.
My only doubt is that on my previous 1600 RAM, XMP did not work properly, but as Tradesman noted, that was for 2 different kits.

My new RAM is in 1 kit of 4*4GB so XMP has a higher chance of working.
                          Thanks again.

Thanks. I will try it if I run into issues with XMP.
