  • Memory recommendation Asus P8Z77 V Pro w/i7-3770k

I'm building a new system and trying to decide what memory to get. What is the main difference between the Ares vs Ripjaws series? A shorter profile on the Ares?

Would the 4 choices below all work and which would be the best bang for the buck? Thanks for any recommendations.

    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C9D-16GXM 1.5V 9-9-9 $125

    G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C10D-16GAO 1.5V 10-10-10 $110

    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL 1.5V 10-10-10-30 $115

    G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C10D-16GAB 1.5V 10-11-10 $140

Ripjaws X were the original design aimed at the 1155 socket (yours) the Ares is a newer design aimed toward socket 2011 and 1155 so either will work fine. The Ares is indeed a lower profile and I believe uses a newer DRAM IC/chip..

Of what you list I'd go with the F3-1600C9D-16GXM, as the best bang, it will provide the best performance of the 1600 sets, since it is CL9, and those OC well so you should be able to easily run them at 1866 with straight 10-10-10-30 timings which is a hair tighter the the Ares 1866 set you list, so you could run these with slightly better performance at 1866 for $15 less
