  • Mixing ram and dram voltages

    Hi I need some advice,

    I have x2 4gb 2133MHZ G skill which run at 1.5v and I bought x2 2gb 2133MHZ G skill , but problem is they run at 1.6v.

My question is will this be a problem as I don't think i can set individual DIMM slot voltages

    My setup is the following

    I7 2600k @ 4.6GHZ 1.4V with Noctua D14
    MSI Z68 GD 65 (G3)
    8GB (X2 4GB) 2133MHZ G SKILL
    GTX 580
    HAF X
    Intel I7 2600K @ 4.6GHZ 1.40V
    G skill 8GB DDR3 2133 MHZ (F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL)
    MSI Z68 GD65 (G3) BIOS N45
    MSI GTX 580 Lightning
Corsair Force Series GT 120GB SSD
Corsair Force Series 3 60GB SSD

Can prob run them together at 1.6, but in part might depend....what two sets do you have, by model # if they run different CAS or timings, may be more difficult (if possible)

      the 8gb is F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL timings are CL 11-11-11-30-2N 1.5V

      The 4gb is F3-17000CL9D-4GBXL CL 9-11-9-28-2N 1.6V

I bought the 4gb as spare in case the 8GB modules fail and I have to RMA. Just always good to have a spare lot of ram somewhere given my past experiance with Corsair Dominator Ram and their high RMA rate.

could try a few ways to mix them at 10-10-10-30 2N 1.6, 9-10-10-29 2N 1.6 or 11-11-11-30 2N 1.5, those would be what I would start with, then take whatever is best of the three and play with the timings/voltage from there while maintaining stability

Thanks, wasn't sure if I could use the timings of the 8Gb for 4gb, you just reassured me

Let us know how it goes, those weren't guaranteed settings, just suggestions on where you could start to TRY and get the sticks to play together

Tried those settings and the system won't boot up. I guess you need them all to be the same and you can't mix and match ram of different voltages at least

It's can be very hard, especially with high freq DRAM, but as said more so with different spec CAS and voltage....could try selling the older set or use in another build possibly

Yeah I plan to sell them, I got the 4gb for cheap anyways. I will just have to wait for the 8GB lots to get cheaper then I can get them too and max out my system.

Thanks anyways TMan for you suggestions.

Still happy with G skill and their quality
