  • Ram Timings w/o OC better proformance?

    Hi,

    I'm just wondering if there's any noticeable proformance increase with adjusting the memory timings and not OCing the RAM.
    I've had problems trying to OC the memory,
    just have been bumping up the FSB until failure.
    I've had my 965 stable at 21x@4.2ghz, but heat was around 60? so I backed it down to 4.0
    I figured I had that leeway, but seems not.. memory is unstable at 210fsb stock timings.
    But like i said, does it matter to play with timing at stock or with memory so cheap now, should I just pick up a better kit?

    Model of the motherboard: MSI NF980
    Model of the memory: 16gb 4/4 F3-10666CL9-4GBRL
    Model of the CPU: AMD 965be 20x @ 4.0ghz

    Hello symp,

    16 gigs of RAM on board will likely afford you very little flexiblity in overclocking RAM or tightening timing. If you absolutely need 16 gigs of ram and greater RAM speed. You will need to upgrade your RAM to a higher speed RAM set.

    Double check the QVL RAM list for your moterboard carefully and read this thread regarding higher RAM speed on AMS CPUs.

      So is that speed and timing, wether noticeable or not that the memory is setup to do?
      And if so, just for giggles, what is the fsb:dram ratio to do that?
      As it is now, it's set to 3:10 on auto to get 667 ..
      manual settings are very limited, and 3:10 isn't even listed if I wanted to do that for myself.

        Symp,

        The number you are providing are from the SPD option tab of CPU Z. What are the Numbers depicted under the memory Tab. You say that: "As it is now, it's set to 3:10 on auto to get 667 ..". 667 MHZ in dual channel mode gives 1333 MHZ. You RAM may already be operating at 1333 MHZ.

        Check it out and report back.

          Do you have the C2 or C3 Revision 965?
          Memory speed typically gives better all around performance versus timings.
          Pick up a set of 2x4GB 1600 CL8 modules and you'll see a noticable difference versus what you now have.
          1600 CL8 versus 1600 CL9, very little performance difference, only in the read/write/copy latencies.

            I know it's running at 1333,
            I was just wondering if it would run at the SPD listed above fine,
            since it's listed as an SPD.
            If so, how would I get that?

              You can give it a try, just enter the timings and freq manually, may have to add just a touch of voltage (maybe .01/.02) to the DRAM and/or CPU/NB voltage. the 685/1370 may show a modest performance in benchmarks, but nothing you'll really 'see'
