  • RAM is "hardware reserved"?

    Alright, I'm stumped.

Just got the parts for my new build, put it all together, boots just fine first try, Windows 7 install goes great, then I get a random restart, and now 8 of my 16GB or RAM is listed as 'hardware reserved' in the resource monitor and 16GB (7.96GB Usable) under my system properties. I ran the Windows Experience Index as soon as I booted the first time after installing all my drivers and specifically remember it showing just a plain 16GB. I checked the BIOS, it reports 16GB and all 4 DIMMS are listed and working. I did a lot of searching the interwebs with no definite solution, so I tried everything I could find. First I tried each stick by itself in DIMM A-1; system booted every time and reported 4GB in BIOS, resource monitor, and system properties. I tried 2 at a time, and starting getting 8/4, and with all 4 its back to 16/8. I tried msconfig > boot > advanced > unchecking memory box. Flashed the BIOS and fresh install of Windows, still no avail. Although occasionally it will boot up with 16/16, then it crashes and restarts (no BSOD, event view reports 'system shut down unexpectedly) and when it comes back I'm at 7.96/16 again. Sometimes my BIOS will only report 8GB as well, then the resource monitor says 16GB installed, 8 available. I've updated all of my drivers, processor is running at a cool 27C, I literally have no clue anymore.

As far as I can tell, no one can seem to pinpoint what exactly is causing this nor have any specific solutions been posted, let alone for my specific setup.

    System Specs:
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    Asus Crosshair Formula V
    Athlon X6 1090T cooled with Zalman CNPS9900Max
    G.Skill RipjawX DDR3 1600 16GB (F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL)
    MSI Radeon HD6950 Frozr II
Corsair 64GB SATA III SSD boot
    Western Digital Cavier 1TB data
Antec 900w High Current Gaming Series

If anyone has any suggestions or help that'd be much appreciated. If you'd like a screen dump of something or a readout of any sort for diagnostics let me know.

    Thanks in advance

Might check your CPU and socket to make sure clean and especially - no bent pins, even slightly bent - ran into this a while back and that was the problem

Pls offer comments on support I provide, HERE, in order to help me do a better job here:

Could that be the case even if sometimes it boots up and all 16 is available? Or wouldn't it consistently not work? I just turned it on and everything is fine. But it will crash and restart eventually (hope not, but it always does), and when it comes back it will only have 7.96 usable

Haha, as I was browsing to upload the picture it froze and restarted, although it is still saying 16gb.... hmmmm...

What settings are you using in BIOS? Did you follow our guide?

Actually yes, I found your guide while I was researching hardware. I changed the timings to 1600MHz 9-9-9-24@1.5v, I also tried 1333MHz 8-8-8-24 and everything on auto. It's been on for about 2 hours now since the restart, everything seems to be stable and Windows is reporting all 16GB. What could cause it to be so sporadic without me changing any settings?

Your "Athlon" X6 only supports DDR3-1333 CL9 natively, so you manual settings are required for DDR3-1600. Especially with full slots, it can become very unstable. AMD technically does not support full slots of DDR3-1600, so you are forcing it to operate.

As a result, needless to say, without any changes to your BIOS, the motherboard/CPU just won't support it. Just like an overclock, once you input the correct voltage and settings, the computer can be extremely fast and stable even though supposedly your hardware should not support it.

Do you have any motherboard specific suggestions for me? The BIOS on this Crosshair V is...much different than those I'm used to.

It's the same general settings, so it doesn't really matter which motherboard.

Look at the guide, and follow it. If you have questions, let us know.
