  • Looking to get some DDR3 memory. Suggestions?

I came here a little over a year ago for various reasons, initially for suggestions on what DDR2 memory to get. 2 years after I bought my lovely DDR2 G.Skill memory, I think it's time for an upgrade. I've been trying to cram in a bunch of research about different memory types and what chips are good for overclocking but I'm still a little unsure. I'm about 80% set on the G.Skill 2x2GB ECO set:

I'll probably buy 2 packs for 8GB. They look great and have some really nice values for the money when overclocked.

Since CPU and motherboard matter, I'm leaning towards the AMD Phenom X6 1090T and the Gigabyte 890FXA motherboard. I realize I'll have to overclock to get to 1600MHz but I planned to do that anyway. I read that AMD and the 890 chipset both like low voltage and tight timing RAM. From everything I've read, the ECO kit will do great. I'm just wondering if there's other routes that might be preferred? I'll most likely want 8GB, I may have to buy just 1 ECO kit now and buy another later due to my budget. Is there another kit, under $100 for 2x2GB that would do better?

    8gb

For 8GB @ 1600 and with AMD might want to look at a single 2x4GB set, there will be less stress on the MC with only 2 sticks. Both the F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL and the F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR would be good choices and are priced at $99.99 for the set(s) at NewEgg

Yea, I meant to ask about 4 sticks putting more stress on the controller. I was seriously considering that first kit you listed since it would give me 8GB right now and I wouldn't have to think about it. The thing is, there's much tighter timings and lower volts with the ECO for just a little bit more cost. Lower timings or less stress on the controller... I don't know It seems everyone says tight timings for AMD is great.

I'm a little leary of tall heatsinks too since I will be using a TRUE with a 120x38mm fan and I'm unsure about clearances.

it's cheaper to go 4GBx2 modules instead of buying 4 modules of 2GB memory. Timings shouldn't be an issue given you OC the 1090T to the 4ghz area.

Seeing the reviews on Newegg, a lot of people have gotten that Ripjaws 2x4GB kit down to CAS 8 or even CAS 7. Also, I just got a coupon for 10% off so I might just grab that kit for $90. Not a bad deal. It would be $40 more for 8GB of the ECO. The Ripjaws is also more popular so better resale value IMO.

I noticed that yesterday too, surely for the price of those.. RipJaws > ECO.

            Thank you

I wanted to hear from you :P I thought about it last night and I do like saving power and the tighter timings would be cool but it seems like the overclocking that people have done on the ECO varies a LOT. It just seemed a wiser choice all around so I bought the 2x4GB Ripjaws. $90, that's less than what I paid for 8GB of DDR2 2 years ago :P
