  • problems with my new ripjaws f3-12800

    hi.

    I've recently bought a new ripjaws 12800 f3-12800CL9D-4GBRL
the writings on the package say it timings : 9-9-9-24

however, on my system, i can't run it at that specific timings.

    here are my systems

    Biostar 790GX A3+
    AMP Phenom II 955
    GSKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

at BIOS, I manually set the DRAM to DDR3 1600, and everything on auto.

at CPU Z reading, my memory run at 9-11-11-29

I've tried to raise the dram voltage to 1.7 even to 1.8 with the specified 9-9-9-24 timings but it won't even boot to windows.

My friend said that this memory could run at 7-7-7-15, but I didnt have a chance to discuss this with him... so, any advice with this ?

any help will be appreciated. thanks.

How much of an OC are you running w/ the CPU. zTo run 1600 w/ you CPU will require an OC and raising the voltages i.e. CPU/MC/HT etc

Pls offer comments on support I provide, HERE, in order to help me do a better job here:

I'm leaving everything to default, except...

      1. I set the p-transition enable to 200x16 at 1.25 v.
(boot reading cpu v at 1.28 v). i did this because the default cpu voltage is too damn high (cpu z reads at 1.44 v !)

      2. I set DDR3 at DDR31600 with no voltage added, auto timings

      edit :

I've read a thread somewhere here... suggesting to raise cpu-nb at 1.175 v and speed 2400...

I understand the cpu-nb voltage raise, but I dont get the speed stuff.
what speed is it? maybe HT speed?

I might give it a try.

        it should be HT speed
but generally it works after the nb voltage increased
you could increase it at most to 1.4-1.5v
        thanks

I've tried to increase nb voltage to 1.2 and ht voltage to 1.4 and 1.5
memory voltage up to 1.8 v...

and my system wont boot with manual 9-9-9-24 settings...

          hmm...

            hmm ...

I was playing with the timing settings, and found something ridiculous.

by auto, my ram goes 9-11-11-29

whit everything the same, I tried to manually set the timings to 9-11-11-29 and voila, it wont boot....

does biostar doesnt support manual memory configuration or the memory that I bought dislike manual settings ??

Try testing one stick at a time in case one is defective.

              Thank you

my friend has the same setup as mine, and he encountered the same problem too...

he asked way many times before me, and came to a conclusion that for intel, ripjaws running at 9-9-9-24 is easy, while for AMD, ripjaws is not that good....

hufh, I think this is my poor decision, buying ripjaws... I shouldve taken ECO...

well, thanks for GSKILL support for the reply anyway.

                one more question...

                which one is better :

                - running 1600 mhz at 9-11-11-29

                or

                - running 1333 mhz at 9-9-9-24

                may I know the reason?

                thanks

Neither. For this memory package, you will want to run DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 or DDR3-1333 8-8-8-21

This memory package should have no problems on an AMD platform.

                  Thank you

would you like to increase NB and HT voltage to 1.4-1.5v first?
not every AMD platfrom could run DDR3 1600 CL9
we found it would be easier to run DDR3 1600 with CL9 or even CL7 when your CPU step is C3
it seems the memory controller of C3 step is better than the one of C2 step
                      thanks

                        thanks for the tips.

I played with the memory timings (again).

                        there are 4 options.

auto, dct 0, dct 1 and both.

                        question(s):

does dct stands for each slot?

coz when I manually set dct 1 and both, my rig wont boot.

but, when I just manually set dct 0 to 9-9-9-24, it boots.

so, if dct stands for each slots, is my ripjaws on slot 2 (dct1) a defect?

                        thanks

edit : i've swap my sticks and it seems that both are working. so, I guess the problem is with the dct stuff.
any clue to what dct is? or, should I contact biostar for that matter?

DCT is referencing each channel. If you would like to activate timing control to both channels, simply set it to Both. Or you can simply set it to the channel you are using.

                          Thank you

I choose both, but only set dct0 on manual while dct1 on auto.

Now, my sticks run at 9-9-9-24.
                            thanks GSKILL ! ! !

one more thing. I really want to try tightening the timings, (I dont know whats the function though, but overclockers tend to do this... I am new to OC btw.) what should I set? nb? ht?

or, does this forum has any thread about OC ing a DDR3 on an AMD rig?

                            thx

for more overclocking info, we'd recommend you to visit some hardware forum like Xtremesystems
                              thanks
