  • adjusting Memory - GA-790fxta-ud5 & F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ

    Hello
just trying to verify the steps & numbers for adjusting memory in BIOS to get memory @ 1600...
This is a new build, everything went together fine in POST... only issue was a "cd/dvd driver missing" in the begining of Windows 7 install.... this was resolved...
I'm not getting any errors or BSOD or problems.... I'm actually alittle disappointed @ the speed of this build(this is my 1st), I am happy that I didn't get any probs that I have read about... hell I was afraid it wouldn't even boot up(Murphy's law...Murphy been known to stay @ the house w/me)
If I understand this right, for this mobo, I would get into -
    MB Intel Tweaker (MIT)
    Set memory Clock to manual
scroll to Memory Clock - enter
    Highlight x8.00 - enter
scroll to DRAM CONFIG - enter
scroll to DDR3 Timing Items - enter
    set to Manual - enter
NOW, there is 3 columns... 1) is the manual settings of numbers, all are on AUTO... 2nd) is SPD settings of numbers & 3rd) is the AUTO settings of numbers... The SPD settings are the numbers that G.Skill has been recommending to use... Should I put all the SPD numbers in to the MANUAL CONFIG Column?
    SPD Column #'s
    CAS Lat-9
    tRCD-9
    tRP-9
    tRAS-24
    Command Tim-1T
    TwTr Command Delay-5T
    Write Recover Time-10T
    Precharge Time- 5T
    Row Cycle Time- 33T
    RAS to RAS Delay-4T

This is the AUTO Columns #'s
    CL-11
    tRCD-11
    tRP-11
    tRAS-29
    Command Time-AUTO
    TwTr command Delay-6T
    Write Recove Time- 12T
    Precharge Time-6T
    Row Cycle Time-40T
    RAS to RAS Delay-5T

    Thank You very much!!

I've ran the following test PRIOR to the manual config above

After making the changes, it should now look like:

    CPU-Z - Memory
    TYPE-DDR3
    Channels # - dual
    Size - 4096MB
    DC Mode - Unganged
    NB Freq. - 2008.9 MHz

    TIMINGS
    DRAM Freq. - ~800 MHz
    FSB DRAM - 1:4
    CL - 9
    tRCD - 9
    tRP - 9
    tRAS - 24
    tRC - 33
    Command Rate - 1T

If so, everything is running just fine.

    Thank you

Not trying to hijack this thread, but i have almost the exact same setup as dobiepaq's I have a xfx 4870 1gb. The rest is the same as his. Ive built computers before, but am new to changing memory settings. The only thing I have done is to go into the bios and select x8.00 so now it registers as 1600. The settings i see now with cpu-z are:
      Dram-803.6mhz
      1:4
      11
      11
      11
      29
      40
      1T
Ive never had a freeze or blue screen or any probs, but are these settings correct? If not, what should it be. I just want the memory to be set correctly. Thanks in advance for whatever help you can give.

You need to set the memory timings since they are being detected incorrectly. CPU-z should look more like:

        Dram-803.6mhz
        1:4
        9
        9
        9
        24
        40
        1T

decided to add 4 more gigs

This is over a year after my last post. I just got 4 more gigs of ram hoping to go to 8. I put them in slots 3 and 4 and then windows wouldn't load. I managed to get into the bios once but couldn't navigate in there. everything froze. I shut down the pc and tried again using each of the new sticks separately (in the 3rd slot), still couldn't get the pc to boot. I tried just going with the 2 sticks i had in there originally and after windows startup repair got finished i was able to get to my desktop. Am i supposed to up the northbridge voltage first before adding the new memory? I know im supposed to change the command rate from 1 to 2 and up the NB to 1.4 from the default 1.1. Is there anything im doing wrong?

            Windows 7 64
(another thing i noticed was my wei dropped across the board)
            was originally 7.5,7.7,7.7,7.7,5.9......Now its 7.4,7.5,7.6,7.6,5.9

Thanks i ended up starting with the original 4gb and then going into the bios, i did what you did. I changed the command rate to 2. That worked. I then added the other 2 sticks. I later went back in and changed the NB voltage to 1.20v Everything runs great even though my WEI changed.

Glad to hear all worked out, for whatever reason, many AMD mobos default to 1T or 1N CR, when most all sticks are designed for 2T or 2N CR....

So far so good with this setup. Im running 2 hd6870's crossfire too. I read that drivers can cause the WEI to change and not to pay attention to it anyways. getting killer fps in Dirt 2, BFBC 2, Crysis... you name it. Doing all this in preparation for Battlefield 3. Cant wait for it!!!

lol thanks. Im still not sure that 1.20v is correct but in my bios as you up the NB voltage the numbers turn from white to orange to red. 1.2 is the first voltage in the orange. I dont think i can select the 1.4 that was recommended by a tech in another post that one is in the red. So far its running stable and no bsod or freezes.

Sounds like you should be good, to a degree the lights are a scare tactic if you will, most mobos try to 'show' a safety factor, but as with many components it's lowballed...spec on DRAM that shows 1.5 is suggested...most will easily run 16-1.65 and higher safely, Intel might list, say 1.3625 as Max voltage for a CPU, but know of many that have exceeded it and never had a problem....with these lights it's sort of like orange is actually Yellow, and getting into red at first is probably more like it should be orange, etc.
