  • New build ASRock Z77 extreme6 and F3-2133 f3-2133C9D-16GXH (Can't make it work)

    Hi, I just build a new PC and right now i'm only able to boot and run stable with the memory running with auto settings (1033 speed instead of 2133).

    These are my specs

    Ivy I7 3770k @3.5Ghz (Not OC at this moment)
    SanDisk sdd 120G
    G.Skill RipJaws 2133 9-11-11-31-2T (running currently at 1033)
    ASRock Z77 Extreme6 Bios 2.40 (Latest)

    When i configure XMP 1.3 Profile 1, the timers and voltage are
    9-11-11-31-2T @ 1.6V. I don't do any manual change and the computer boot and window start. After a couple of minutes, applications start failing and then i get BSOD.

    Setting timers and volt manually i end on a boot loop until i change the ram configuration to auto again.

    I insert the RAM in DDR3_A2 and DDR3_B2 as recommended on ASrock mobo manual. I may try to change it later today but i was wondering if there's anything else that i may be missing.

    thanks

    OK, just a quick update.

    I start testing one stick individually on the same DDR3_B2 slot as recommended by ASrock manual and it still fail (both of the sticks) with XMP profile 1, or with manual setup.

    Now i decide to use DDR3_A1 and B1 slots instead, and now it seems that is working fine. I'm running Prime95 and so far no error, no crashes, or BSOD. Is this something that i could expect? does this mean the MOBO may be damage and i should RMA it? or is expected that some ram slots may should be only used when all slots are going to be populated? I'm just wondering.

    I will post for a final confirmation after i finish testing today.

      If neither will run in a particular slot then good probability you may have a bad slot in the mobo

        Ok, i left prime95 running last night with xmp profile 2 (profile 1 got some errors after the first 30min) and test stop after 1hr with errors on all workers. FATAL ERROR Rounding was 0.5, expected less that 0.4.

        Is there something i should do manually on the timers or i may have a bad MOBO.

        thanks

          As I stated in my last response, sounds like a bad mobo - even if only 1 bad slot and even if you aren't going to use that slot, it's a harbinger of disaster....A single bad component on the mobo weakens other parts of the mobo.

            Yeah, that's true however i just run prime95 with only one stick at a time for 4hrs without issues. This still can mean my mobo has issues and i may need to RMA but i already contact ASrock support for some guide before i send the MOBO back.

            Tradesman, i just have a quick question regarding XMP because i'm not familiar with the details and i was using AMD before this upgrade. It is actually easy to setup the memory? i mean if expected that i just select an XMP profile and the RAM should work as expected? (assuming no damage component exist). How i can troubleshoot this? how you knwo what parameters to change?

            thanks

              Ideally that's how it should work, however, very few of the mobo makers have the BIOS's up to snuff for XMP and high density, high freq sticks.....the info for the DRAM is loaded into the SPD of the DRAM, the BIOS when told to enable XMP and use a profile is suppose to take that info and put it into effect for the CPU and mobo - unfortunately, few mobo makers actually 'test' DRAM at it's specs i.e. AT 2133 or 2400 or whatever, they pout the sticks in and see if it runs at the mobos default - normally 1333 or 1600 (which is why if you have fast sticks they say to call the DRAM maker) - see my info post on QVL's here:

              http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=10566

              Generally if a set won't work the BIOS isn't interpreting the info and putting it into effect for the DRAM advanced timings or voltage adjustments.

              If you post up your BIOS settings for DRAM timings and system voltages, I'll take a look - off hand with your combo may take a look at your tRFC (advanced timings) will prob want about 174 - 209 (I'd start at the higher) and check for MC (Memory Controller) voltage, believe the CPU/VTT on this mobo start at about 1.12

                Hi Tradesman,

                here is the information, let me know if i'm missing something.

                Load XMP Setting XMP 1.3 Profile 1
                DRAM Ref Freq Clock = Auto = 100
                DRAM Freq = Auto = DDR3-2133 (1:8)
                DRAM Voltage = 1.65v (I change this from auto) but i test with 1.6v as well with same problems
                VTT Volt = Auto = 1.141v
                PCH Volt = Auto = 1.058v
                CPU PLL Volt = Auto = 1.832v
                VCCSA Volt = Auto = 0.925v

                DRAM Timers
                tCL = Auto = 9
                tRCD = Auto = 11
                tRP = Auto = 11
                tRAS = Auto = 31
                CR = Auto = 2N

                tWR = Auto = 16
                tRFC = 208 (I change it from default that was 178 but same results)
                tRRD = Auto = 6
                tWRT = Auto = 9
                tRTP = Auto = 9
                tFAW = Auto = 25
                tCWL = Auto = 7

                There's others values, let me know if you need those as well but is basically auto.

                thanks in advance

                  Those timings look pretty good, still leaning to a mobo or CPU problem

                    thanks Tradesman for your reply. So it can also be a CPU problem even when it seems to be fine running with one stick? because i already request a RMA for the MOBO, but i can include the CPU as well.

                    I'm also wondering, what could be a logic answer on why it seems the computer is stable for regular use like gaming (bf3, bo2, ps2) where all work flawless for hrs, but prime fail? My only guess is that prime will try to use every single resource available and regular applications may not.

                    thanks again

                      Think that's the best way to go, otherwise, I know if it was me, it would end up being the other component other option is off to a shop, and they may or may not be able to tell definitively

                        quick update. I just rma and install the the mobo and cpu. Configure xmp profile 1 and only change tRFC to 208 as show in a previous post. The PC crash with bsod right when is booting up. So my question to you, should I RMA the RAM? or is there anything else I could do or change.

                          Do you have the latest BIOS on the new mobo? CPUVTT voltage about 1.15? CPU OCed to 42 or so? If so prob RMA the DRAM...may want to run Memtest on this setup (each stick individually for 4-5 passes)

                            these are my voltages
                            VTT Volt = Auto = 1.141v
                            PCH Volt = Auto = 1.058v

                            Yes i have the latest BIOS already updated.

                            And my CPU is running as default. I will try both CPU to 1.15 and 4.2 OC.

                            thanks

                              ok, i try 1.15 VTT and OC to 4.2 and still get BSOD. I didn't change any of the cpu voltage, just the cpu multi to 42.

                              this is a summary some of the changes i did.

                              first i use default XMP Profile 2 (with P1 it doesn't boot)

                              Default tRFC is 278 (BSOD right away after selecting to boot win7)

                              Change then tRFC to 208 and it boot, but right after i login all applications start crashing and then BSOD.

                              any other suggestion before i RMA the RAM? i still need to run memtest86 but wonder if there's any ram config change i need to do before that or i should use default settings.

                              thanks
