  • Lenovo M58P Max Memory

    Hi guys!

I am trying to find a way to increase my RAM in my work computer, as it has only 2x2GB of DDR3.

    This computer is a Lenovo M58P 6137-CE2.

Officially, it is supposed to support only up to 8GB of ram, as it has a Q45 chipset and it seems to be a limitation of it.

However, one of its bios update enabled 4GB dimm support :
    5CKT67A/5CJT67A
    - Support 4GB DIMMs.
    (bios changelog is here)

Therefore my question is quite simple, what ddr3 kit should i put inside this little guy?
It has two empty slots, the easy way would be to just take 2 more sticks each of 2GB and let it stat at 8gb.
But the fact it is supposed to support 4GB dimms make me want to try to feed him with 2 sticks of 4GB, putting it at 12GB. I fear it *could* boot with 2 dimms of 4gb each, but not more (not 2x2gb + 2x4gb).
I NEED more ram, but can't change the machine just yet.

I even thought of buying a F3-2133C11Q-16GAO kit, if it works with the Lenovo then fine, if not then it goes inside my home desktop to expand my current kit (F3-17000CL11Q-16GBXL, running with a MSI X79A-GD65 8d).

    What to you guys think?

Did i already answered my own question?

Might check the specs, but I believe that only supports through 1066 sticks, if they've got the support to 4GB sticks I'd suggest either F3-8500CL7D-8GBRL or F3-8500CL7D-2GBNQ...trying the 2133 sticks you mention, to run smoothly at 1066 would prob need to be dropped to about CL5 or 6 and I doubt if the MC on the mobo could handle it

      Thanks a lot!

Do you think it would handle the sticks from F3-8500CL7D-8GBRL along with my existing 2x2gb, or not? Or should i be better to just take this kit : F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT and just settle to 8gb?

Again, thank you very much for you answer!

EDIT : i could not find anything slower than F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT, with 2x2gb (i fear the limitation of the chipset, if it can handle more than 8gb or not, and if it does take 4gb dimms as it is supposed to do since the bios update, it may very well only take 2x4gb dimms but not more)

EDIT 2 : i found this not very far from here, and it looks very well like this damn chipset, just like P45 (for which i asked a very similar question a few months ago) is quite picky with the 16gb/8gb question. So i may very well be better to just settle with 8gb of ram, even though it may (or may not) work with more.

Can always give it a try and see, if sticks bought locally, generally they can be returned (but check policy) if bought on-line though you look at paying return shipping etc, if they don't work

Okay well i finally ordered this kit : F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT
I have 10 days to return it if it does not work, and it was the cheapest i could find in the bounderies i had (<= PC10600, 2x4GB, in stock for the e-retailer i chose).

I will let you know what happens!

I hope it will work, I found this which says, page 238, that models M58p 6137 (though not specifically 6137-CE2) are supposed to support up to 16GB of DDR3, so fingers crossed! ^^

              Hi everyone!

So i received the kit today, and, well, i am writing this on my work computer, with more than enough ram!

The two 4gb sticks are perfectly recognized (well, i feared at first it wouldn't work, as when i first started the computer, the fans were spinning very fast, then it shut down by itself...), along with the previous two 2gb sticks, so i have 12gb of ram running at 1066.

Perfect, and final answer is YES, this computer handles 4gb sticks nicely. I wouldn't bet it can really handle 16gb, but it may just be! I won't try, as i have more than enough ram to get the work done...

Thanks every one, gskill remains my favorite brand of RAM!

Glad to hear a success story, and you never know, might well handle the sticks would prob need a DRAM and/or MC voltage increase, but that's normal when adding additional sticks

                  This thread saved my bacon

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for everyone on this thread. It's the first really useful result I found when looking for the maximum memory possible on Lenovo M58p's. I've got 2 that I use for a VMWare lab, and being able to bring them both from 8 GB up to 12 GB has been a huge help.

Just make sure you update that BIOS - forgot to do it on one, and thought I might have applied to much pressure to the motherboard when re-seating the memory, then caught the bios version when I went back to the original memory.

Also, if you want to support more than 2 NIC's in these systems, the latest BIOS upgrade will support that as well.
