  • Memory for Dell Dimension 5100

    I'm looking to increase the memory on my Dimension 5100. I'm not tech savvy, so I'm looking for something that will work without any glitches. I can swap out the memory sticks, but that's about it.

    This is what I'd use;

    MSI Big Bang xPower x58
    Intel i7 950
    GSkill DDR3 2000 6x2Gb
    Gigabyte GTX 460 x2 SLi
    OCZ Vertex 2 SSD - OS Drive
    WD Black 640Gb x2 RAID0 - Apps and Programs
    WD Black 1Tb backup and storage
    Corsair TX950W
    Water cooling - Swiftech and DangerDen

      My PC Owner's Manual seems to say that 533 Mhz is the max, and that each connector takes a max of 1 GB.

        Yep,

        I'm looking at page 99 of your owners manual right now

        Four dimm slots each capable of supporting up to 1Gb of memory operating at DDR3 533
        for a total of 4Gb system RAM

        Based on that here you go;

        Buy two kits for a total of 1Gbx4

          That looks like 200-pin laptop variety. I need the desktop. Also, if I only buy 2, not 4, should I take the older 2 out? I think I read somewhere doing so might actually speed the machine up a bit.

            Ok, I gotcha. I thought that you had a laptop...............

            Guess that I should have asked.

            If it were me and I could only swing 2Gb then I would use the new kit and not mix and match.

            However, you're biggest improvement will come from an upgrade to 4Gb so if you can swing that it would be best.

            Here's my final and hopefully correct recommendation - either of these x2 for a total of 4Gb
