So is this firmware update required if you are having no trouble with the shipping firmware? Is there any critical performance or stability increase etc?

I think you can flash successfully on Win PE.
I Flashed my 128G SSD successfully on Windows Server 2008 x64.

Has anybody managed a successful upgrade with the SSD in a USB enclosure?

I have a machine with RAID setup so disk 0 and 1 are taken up.

can i just plug it into any spare sata port?

I not to mention it did not even come with a sata cable and who knows if i can find one.

can someone clear up this disk 1 , disk 0 business?
The instructions are generic and relate to your typical desktop motherboard layout. Port 0 is typically the first SATA cluster (2 ports stacked), closest to your CPU. Connect your Falcon to this port and check in the BIOS it is on SATA_0. Do this BEFORE you bridge the pins to set it to Default Mode (when you do this, the drive is hidden from operation view; only the firmware application can see it).

You then add a second boot drive (e.g. Seagate 320GB) to the second SATA cluster i.e. Port 1 or SATA_1.

I don't think you can use your RAID array if the firmware application checks if your Falcon is on SATA_0. You will have to use another hard drive and disconnect your RAID array for the time being.
