  • Adding more DDR5 RAM on an existing PC. Possible?

Recently I have finished building a new PC (again) from scratch. Its basic configuration is:

PC case: Inter-Tech INFINI2 Gaming Full Tower Case
PSU: Corsair RM Series RM850 - 850 Watt 80 PLUS Gold
    Motherboard: ASUS Prime Z790-A Wi-Fi
CPU: Intel Core i9-13900KF Boxed (Raptor lake)
System Disk: Adata 1TB XPG Gammix S70 Blade PCI-E M.2 SSD
    RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 XMP (F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5K)

To make the thread shorter, I skip description details of the rest hardware. I intend to focus on the existing RAM and the possibility of its extension.

The existing RAM consists of two DIMMs, which are occupying the two of the four M/B memory slots. When I purchased this kit, I really tried to find a 128GB kit of this model, but I could not locate it. As far as I understand, GSkill does NOT make such a kit for this model.

    My question:

What will happen if I get another, ABSOLUTELY SAME, 2-DIMM kit and add it in the remaining empty slots?
    Will it work or not?

    Thanks in advance

P.S.: The operating system is Windows 11 Pro 64-bit

You could try to get a 2nd kit of the same SKU, but the IC type could still differ (H16A/H16M). Also many dual channel DDR5 motherboards don't support that spec with four modules. Once you utilize the secondary slots, the memory frequency limit is considerably lower, compared to just two DIMMs in the primary slots.

So with that being said, even if you manage to grab a 2nd kit with the same IC type, it might take some adjustments in the UEFI to get it to work and fully stable. In the end it is an untested configuration and your setup will dictate the usable max frequency.

Just for the record: Currently not even ASUS lists any viable 4x32GB configuration in their own QVL and the two 4x48GB ones are DDR5-5200 only.

Thank you so much for your reply and your suggestions, mate.

It seems that my consideration for adding more RAM is not of real value. However, I have just learned that Asus has worked together with Corsair, to update BIOS on their 600 and 700 series M/Bs, to accept a total of 192GB RAM with four DIMMs, instead of the maximum 128GB total, which was the M/B spec of these series. Please, see the relevant link at the end of this post.

Surely, this falls out of our discussion and it is more than certain that it's out of my intension to replace my existing G.Skill Trident Z5 DIMMs with Corsair made ones. For two reasons:
      1. The tremendous cost of such a kit.
      2. I have been a fan of G.Skill and I am not going to change that in favor of another maker. Not that I have something against Corsair (of course, I don't), but this development will not change my attitude for G.Skill.

      Again, thanks for your reply.
