  • Some advice on RAM

    Hey everybody, hope you're well.

I recently bought two 16GB sticks of this RAM: F5-6000U4040E16GX2-TZ5RK

Here's the product page on the gskill website: F5-6000U4040E16GX2-TZ5RK F5-6000U4040E16GA2-TZ5RK - G.SKILL International Enterprise Co., Ltd. (gskill.com)

I am looking to purchase another two 16GB sticks in the near future, and I have noticed that this SKU is getting harder and harder to find, and also more expensive. I can now find it about 150e more than I had originally purchased it.

My question is, are there any other SKUs that may work well with it? There's one that has a J in the product code, rather than U, but there's slight differences in voltage and I don't want to risk it.

If I have to bite the bullet and get the same SKU I'll do it, I just want some confirmation from people who have better RAM knowledge than I do.

    Thanks!

If you are intending to run 4 sticks in a 4 slot motherboard, my advice would be to stay with the same make and model. When you mix and match models, you run the risk that your motherboard and/or processor will not handle the combination well with 3 possible results--1) the system will no longer boot; 2) the system will boot but be unstable; 3) the system will be forced to run at level that fails to take full advantage of what either set of RAM is capable of. If you still have the ability to return the RAM you have, I would do that in exchange for the J series equivalent. Bear in mind G.Skill is also now offering 64 gig 2 stick kits (32 gigs per stick) and that may actually be your best bet if you can find one of those.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I can no longer return the RAM I've got, and I'm wondering if it would make sense to simply sell the one I've got and get 4 sticks from the J series.

Is the U series discontinued then, and replaced by the J series?

Newegg is a descent resource: http://www.newegg.com. Here are links to two options that should be a match to your set: 1)https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-...82E16820374320; and 2) https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb/p/N82E16820374314.

I can't honestly tell you why the U series is so hard to come by. You may just have to wait until there's more production. That said, based on their current product offerings, it seems that G.Skill is pushing J series models more. There are a lot more of those in the wild to be sure.

Thanks for that. I am in the EU, so Newegg is no go, but I've managed to find them on a German store through eBay, so there's still some hope. I'll probably order them in a few weeks.
