  • Which modules to add RAM to an existing Asus X99 2133?

Hello, I need to add some RAM to an ASUS X99-A with an Intel I7 of some years ago.
The RAM already installed is 16GB made with 4x4GB modules of F4-2133C15-4GRB.
Would it be safe to add at least 2x8GB modules of F4-2133C15-16GIS?
    Thank you.
    f.

It is not recommended to mix separate memory kits / modules. Ideally a single kit should be used, such as:

      Thanks for the reply.

Isn't the higher speed a problem? IIRC the Asus X99-A lists 2133 as its max ram speed.

But bear in mind that I don't know what I'm talking about, frankly...

I had the chance of trying 2x 8GB 2133 GIS modules.

Following Asus indications I put the two 8GBs into slots B2 and D2 while still having the 4GB ones into slots A1, B1, C1 and D1.

Then in the BIOS I could only see the first of the four 4GB modules in slot A1 and nothing else. I can't exclude bad placement of the modules in the sockets
as the PC in on the flor and the four socket on the left are almost hidden behind the pump and the fan of a cooling system with liquid.

I will make another try to see if anything change. Do I have to change any setting in the BIOS after I put in the new modules?
        Thank you.

        PS.
Before putting the 8GB in, I could see only three of the four 4GB modules in the BIOS but, after putting in and then out the 8GBs, now I can see all four 4GBs.

I'm still on an old bios because I've always been afraid to brick the PC: can an update help?

Mixing different types of modules can lead to a wide range issues and only a few of them might be resolved with a BIOS update. Especially modules of different density can require different resistances and training parameters in general. The system dropping slots and/or channels during POST is the typical result.

To update the BIOS, make sure to either use USB flashback (if available) or a memory setup, that you have confirmed to work without issues.

If it does not work out, replace the existing memory with a proper quad kit, ideally one from the configurator link above.

I updated the bios but I can confirm that when I put in the 2 8GB modules, two of the four 4GB disappear.
So I'll have to go for a 32GB kit (8x4GB or 4x8GB) but I'm a bit concerned because in the QVL I can't find the actual kit listed above.
In fact, no "GIS" ending modules are listed in the QVL: will they surely work all the same or it can be they won't?
            Thank you.

OK, I will change the 4x4GB with a 4x8GB kit but, even if the G.skill site filter tells the .GIS are compatible with the X99/A,
they are not listed in the QVL (maybe the last QVL is older that the issue date of the .GIS?) so how can I be sure before I buy them that they will be working OK?
              Thank you

                You mean the motherboard QVL?

ASUS only has a small selection of items available for validation from each memory manufacturer. So their list is by no means complete. Imagine the amount of time and cost validating all models from all manufacturers would take. It would neither be economically justifiable nor feasible.

The DRAM FAQ also covers that:

"Why is G.SKILL's Qualified Motherboard List different from my motherboard manufacturer's QVL?"

Yes, I can understand the absence of a kit from the QVL. And with the mobo not being supported anymore, surely ASUS is not going to update the QVL, of course.
And yes, I read the link you provided and it's understandable.
So today I removed all the 4 4GB modules I was using and put in only the two new 8GB modules but the PC didn't boot.
I cleared the CMOS and launched the RAM auto tuning but after many short reboots it stopped,
giving the "53" error code on the display on the mobo (RAM compatibility issues). So I put the 4GB kit back and they work as before.

I hoped the 8GB would work so I could buy a 4x8GB of the same model and had the chance to work with 32 or,
if they all would work, with 48Gb but the test I did today, if it's definitive, tells me that I will have to buy something else: any advice?

Can you give me the code of a SURELY working kit? I need to be sure before the purchase because, as I would buy them as a company,
here in Italy I'm not entitled to send them back in the 14 days after the purchase. Only consumer buyers are protected by that law.

                  Thank you.
