  • DDR4 RAM for my Desktop (and maybe Laptop too)

    Hello all,

I am new to this forum so I am sorry if I am not following the appropriate rules, etiquette, and such.

I've come here because I need help deciding which RAM to buy for my Desktop and I'm considering buying some new RAM sticks for my Laptop too.

My Desktop is a Dell Inspiron 5675 (AKA a prebuilt). I have 2x16GB 2400MHz DDR4 G.Skill RAM right now because I thought that was the fastest RAM speed my motherboard supported but I read in a Dell forum that someone bought 2666MHz RAM and it worked on this MOBO because the JEDEC SPD was set to 2666MHz although the XMP profile was 3200MHz. My Desktop does achieve 2400MHz according to benchmarks and CPU-Z. I'm running and AMD rig with a Ryzen 7 1700.

Can I get some help in buying the best possible RAM for my Desktop?

Also I've got 2x8GB 2400MHz G.Skill RAM in my Laptop right now and I only get 2133 MHz from it unfortunately.
Should I return it and get only what my MOBO can support, not bother with it anymore, or should I test out a different SODIMM RAM which might run faster on my Laptop? My userbenchmark keeps saying my RAM is severely underperforming (probably because it won't run at 2400MHz) and it drives me crazy because I'm quite sure my Laptop isn't capable of XMP settings.
    It's got integrated graphics and a two-core i5-6200U.

    Thank you!

DDR4-2666 should be supported for the desktop, however it may not make a significant difference to exchange if you currently have DDR4-2400 CL17. This is assuming you want to maintain 32GB and not upgrade to 64GB.

For the laptop, it can only support DDR4-2133 due to CPU limitation, so this is the ideal kit if you would like to upgrade to 32GB:

      Thank you for your reply!

I bought both of the G.Skill RAMs (Desktop and Laptop) recently on Newegg, so I can still return it and get the correct RAM, which apparently is $5 cheaper in the case of the Desktop RAM.

Currently I have this RAM in my Desktop:

So you're saying I could upgrade to this one and actually achieve 2666 MHz? But you don't think it would make a significant difference in performance?

As for the Laptop RAM, I don't want to upgrade the GBs as 16GB is more than enough for my Laptop usage. But you're saying it's not worth going thru the trouble of getting the correct 2133 MHz RAM sticks then? Wouldn't it run better if I used 2133 MHz RAM because it has lower latency?

      Thanks again!

I think I forgot to quote. Please read my reply above! Thanks a million.

It should be the one I linked for the desktop upgrade to DDR4-2666. The one you linked is DDR4-2400 CL15, it would run at DDR4-2133 since the system is unable to support XMP Profile.

For the laptop, it will run at highest DDR4-2133 even if using a higher frequency kit so any type will be fine as long as it is compatible.
