  • F3-12800CL8D + M4A87TD/USB3 + 1090t = bsod

    Hello everybody,

First let me thank you all for the forum, I found many useful information here.

And now, I would ask a little help. I'm having a compatibility problem that is driving me crazy, here are the specs of the components:
HexaCore AMD Phenom II X6 Black Edition 1090T
    2 x 2GB G.skill F3-12800CL8D-4GBTD DDR3-1600 CL 8-8-8-24 1.6v
    Asus M4A87TD/USB3 - http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?p_id=nlwyri9wlniyhaaa
    ATI Radeon HD 5830 (Cypress)

The problem happens only with more than one stick, the computer turns on but stays on a black screen, sometimes he passes it, but when you reach the windows always get a bsod with several different messages.

I tested each RAM memory with memtest individually, each stick for 8 hours, none showed any problems, but with 3 or 2 sticks of memory I had many errors in memtest.

I do not know if it makes any difference, but I can not use the first slot for memory because the processor heatsink is on top.

I've tried resetting the BIOS settings and update the BIOS, but did not solve the problem, the BIOS shows the memory as 9-9-9-24 instead of 8-8-8-24.

Does anyone know what might be happening? what else can I test?

    Thanks

After you updated your bios, did you completely clear the CMOS.
Best way to do this is to remove the mobo battery for 20-30 minutes.
For stability purposes, manually enter the memory frequency, timings & DRAM voltage in the bios, did you do this?
1600Mz may require overclocking your CPU clock (FSB) on your board.
If so, then use the CPU & NB multiplier to adjust the frequencies back to non-overclocked levels.
You will need to get your memory stable before overclocking the CPU and NB.

I've cleared the CMOS and now I made some new tests.

      * Using the 2nd slot the computer turn on but does not leave the black screen.

      * Using the memory in the 2nd and 4th slot (dual channel), the computer turns on, recognizes the memories, but I get the blue screen whenever he gets on the windows, sometimes not leaving the black screen, tried resetting the BIOS settings but had no success too.
      * Using the 3rd and 4th slot (single channel), the computer turned on and had no problems, did a stability test and no blue screen. When I tried to use manual timing and voltage in the BIOS, I got blue screen, but resetting the settings worked.

I believe that the 2nd slot is a problem that, unfortunately, I have 3 sticks, one of which is unusable by the heatsink, but I'll change it if this is the problem.

What settings I should try to stabilize the system?

Why even using the factory settings the system has an automatic overclocking?
In Everest I see in the FSB range from 90 to 230 MHz and clock between 1300MHz and 3700MHz.

These pictures are from when I used the automatic overclocking.

Where can i adjust the multipliers? I can not find these settings.

I highly recommend that you do not use the automatic overclocking feature.
Your CPU is throttling for two reason: Cool & Quiet is enabled and you have Turbo set to Auto.
You need to set all of your settings back to default (stock) and work on getting your memory stable first.
Please post a screen shot of CPU-Z with your SPD tab open.
Place your two matched G. Skill modules in the black slots, you will then be in dual channel mode.
Occupying three slots will put your memory into single channel mode (not recommended).

Thank you for your attention YourNemesis007,

I believe I have found the problem, I was trying to use the 2nd and 4th slot (black) to stay in dual channel, but the 2nd slot appears to be damaged, I can not use it without any problems.
What I did was cut a little piece of the heatsink and now I use the 1st memory slot.
I did a test with 3 sticks of memory, skipping the 2nd slot, passed a memory test, stability test, and everything is working perfectly.

I configured the BIOS to 8-8-8-24 and I also have not had any more bsod.

What is better, using two sticks (2x2GB) in blue slots or use 3 sticks (3x2GB) two in blue slots and one in the black slot?

Here is a picture of CPU-Z

I apologize, I thought that you have the ASUS Crosshair IV Formula.
Are you telling me that your ASUS board has 6 memory slots?
This would be highly unusual for an AMD motherboard.
Always run memory in pairs, which would allow for dual channel mode.
Running three sticks would put your memory configuration into single channel mode.

Sorry, my English is a little rusty.

Actually, I only have 4 slots on MB, one of them is broken. It took me forever to figure this out because I've tried to use dual channel using the black slots, the heatsink was on top of the blue one. Now that I discover that the black slot is broken I'll be able to overclock and reach at least 4.1GHz.
Can you tell me where can I set the multiplier in this MB? I did not find the setting, perhaps your BIOS has the same configuration. How did you get 4.13GHz?

In the bios, set the CPU overclocking mode to Manual.
This will open up additional/advanced overclocking options.
Overclocking is an art and only comes with experience, there is a major learning curve, so be patient.
