  • 16000CL9T-6GBRHD > 2000 MHz?

    I have;
    Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws + Turbulence II Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model F3-16000CL9T-6GBRHD (link)
    Montherboard: EVGA E758-A1 3-Way SLI (x16/x16/x8) LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard (link)
    CPU: Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80601930 (link)

    When I put the dd3 triple-channel ram into the motherboard, it loaded up under 1066 Mhz. I went into the bios, and set it at xmp profile 1, which sets the memory at 2000 MHz, when I did that I got POST error 25. I tried different timings, and voltages from 1.60 to 1.65. (My motherboard supports 0.025 voltage increments.) Kept getting post error 25.

    So for the time being I have the ram on 1666 MHz, timings 9-9-9-9-24-2N. I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong, since the ram is rated at 2000 MHz?

    I'm guessing I need to RMA the ram?

      If the ram doesn't fail, then no it's not faulty. No processor on the market supports DDR3-2000 speeds. Max on Intel is DDR3-1600 and on AMD it's DDR3-1333. Remember, try to max out at 1600 mhz on the RAM and try to tighten timings if anything. There's a very good chance that your processor cannot handle DDR3-2000. Are you using the stock cooler on your processor? I would recommend trying to get your CPU below 25C in order to see if you can clock the RAM safely to 2000mhz speeds. If your computer is posting under those speeds the RAM is NOT at fault.

        I use a Corsair H50.

        Temps; CPU 32C
        Core 1, 44C
        Core 2, 27C
        Core 3, 28C
        Core 4, 33C

        I read online, and apparently 2000MHz can be done, but I need to make all sorts of changes to the CPU Vtt. Which sounds rather dangerous, still interesting.

          Correct, the CPU is only rated for DDR3-1333 CL9, so anything above this requires an over volt to CPU VTT (memory controller). If you have the Corsair H50, it is not much dangerous since even a high voltage the CPU will be cool. Start from 1.30V, then work your way up to see what it needs to be stable at DDR3-2000. Or you can start from DDR3-1600, see what it needs at that, then work your way up. This is the safest/proper way if you have no idea what voltage it needs.

          Thank you
