  • F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ and ASUS M4A78T-E

Sorry for the long post, but I figured I'd get all the info out the first time.

I've searched the forms and looked at every post about the config of this motherboard and ram type but I'm still having problems and just need to know if I'm missing anything obvious.

First I'll start with my set up.
    ASUS M4A78T-E
    F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ 8gig (4 sticks)
    AMD 955BE
    Thermaltake Toughpower 750W
    Radeon HD5870

I just got the two extra sticks of F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ as an upgrade and installed them running my previous BIOS settings as follows.
    DRAM: DDR3-1600
    CPU BUS: 200
    DRAM Timings: 9-9-9-24
    DRAM Voltage: 1.60

This setup worked stable for my first two stick so I figured it would jive with my new ones. The results were a mixed bag of BSOD and not posting at all so I came back and browsed the post and found some tips and set it up as follows:

    DRAM: DDR3-1333
    CPU BUS: 240
    DRAM Timings: 9-9-9-24
    DRAM Voltage: 1.50
    CPU-NB: 1.2000

This only made things worse, so I went back in and reset everything to default (AUTO) and the system indeed ran stable (albeit slower than it should with 8gigs of 1600) but slower than it did with my original 4gig alone.
I started to suspect a bad stick so I went back and did a round of MEMTEST with each stick in different slots and my BIOS set to default. Everything checked out OK with no errors. At this point I went back in and set up BIOS with the above settings and ran all the sticks thru again. Every stick performed good until the last stick was tried and my machine refused to post.
Again, I set everything back to default and all ran well.

Am I missing some crucial setting that is messing up my ram? I only changed the settings listed above I have not changed any of the advanced settings and I have the most current version of BIOS for my MOBO.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or do you think I have some bad ram?

Raised the CPU-NB and DRAM voltage this morning and got less errors in memtest. Still not getting any errors when set to default.

If I'm not getting any errors in Memtest with the BIOS at default settings does that mean my RAM is ok?

So, no one has any ideas at all?

When running 8GB with all dimms populated, you will probably need to do some extra voltage tweaking.

        Try this:

        CPU/NB voltage - 1.275 to 1.30v
        NB voltage - 1.3875v
        HT Link voltage - 1.275v

See if this helps with stability.

Tried your settings YourNemesis007, the system posted but was unstable still got errors in memtest as well.

Tried GSKILL TECHS settings as well and the system would not post, but I am a little stumped over the CPU-NB Voltage settings. You say to set CPU-NB Voltage +0.1V
My CPU-NB min settings are .8000 so do you mean that I should have it set at .9000?

Also, should I have the DCT Ungauged set to enable or any of those other settings changed?

Heres how I had it set up with the GSKILL Techs recomendation.

            AI Overclocking Tuner: Manual
            CPU BUS: 240
            PCIE: 100
            DRAM: 1333
            DRAM Timings: 9-9-9-24
            DRAM Voltage: 1.50V
            CPU-NB Voltage: .9000

Change your CPU/NB voltage setting from offset to manual.
This will allow you to manually enter specific voltage settings in your bios.
Then follow the advice on voltage settings in my previous post.

Got it!!.. Bumped CPU-NB voltage to 1.30 and everything is running smooth with no errors in Memtest.

Next step is to change it over to 1T and see if it stays stable. Thanks a ton for all the help!! I'd buy you a beer if I ever get the chance!

Well, T1 made the system unstable, so I set back to auto and let it's currently running in T2. Do I need to tweak the voltage in order to run T1 or should I just keep it in T2 and call it a day?

Back to the drawing board! Even though I got no errors when running Memtest for over 8passes the system still crashes to BSOD when I try to run a game or any big program.

Any other suggestions? Should I keep bumping the CPU-NB voltage?

To help me to see where you are at right now, please post a pic of CPU-Z with these tabs open:

                      1.) CPU

Ok, a couple of things standout out here:
Increase your tRC from 33 to 40
Both your HT Link and NB frequency are actually under clocked at 1920MHz.
Your 955 overclock is fairly aggressive, you need to get your memory stable before overclocking the CPU.
Set CPU at default (3.2GHz) and the HT Link & NB at default (2000MHz).
Now run memory stability tests with it get to "Ganged" mode, it will put less stress on the IMC.

                          CPU/NB voltage - 1.30v
                          NB voltage - 1.3875v
                          HT Link voltage - 1.275v
                          AMD Phenom II X6 1090T@ 4.2GHz
Corsair H50 Hydro (push/pull intake fans)
                          ASUS Crosshair V Formula

Wait, my 955 is overclocked? I havent messed with any settings on my CPU other than unlocking all 4 cores, should I undo that?

What do you mean unlocking your four cores?
The 955 comes with all four cores unlocked, there are no cores to unlock.
Return your CPU clock (Bus Speed) to 200MHz, this will put your 955 back at stock frequency.
CPU Clock@ 200MHz with the CPU multiplier at 16.0
