  • Upgrade from dual channel to triple channel?

    G'day,

I'm currently running 8gb of dual channel F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL on my P55A-UD3 and i5 750 system. Bought 2 kits of 2x2gb for a total of 8gb. It runs great, runs at 1600MHz with only 1.58V and the QPI voltage doesn't need to be too high either, with the CPU running at 3.8GHz.

Question is, I'm thinking of upgrading to an i7 930 system, haven't decided on the motherboard yet. Can I just buy another kit of 2x2gb for a total of 12gb and will it then run in triple channel mode, or do I need to buy a 12gb triple channel kit?

Triple channel is pretty important to me, as the programs I run are very ram intensive and have shown to get big performance gains with faster ram. But I really can't afford the upgrade if it requires me to buy a whole new 12gb ram (another kit of 2x2gb is $120AUD, a 12gb kit is more like $400 and up).

    Thanks for the help,
    Tudz

You don't need to buy a 12Gb triple channel kit.

I've done exactly what you'd like to do and my system runs just fine.
