  • help with xmp profile 6gbnq

    Tech specs:
    Motherboard: ga-x58a-ud3r
    ram: f3-12800cl9t-6gbnq
    cpu: core i7 930
    chipset: 1136

    I ran memtest86+ and I noticed that the memory was identified as f3-12800cl9-2gbnq, using only 2 of the sticks from a tri-channel kit purchased as f3-12800cl9t-6gnq. The third stick was left out because it was already diagnosed as faulty.

    Is it normal that the two sticks in a dual channel configuration change indentifying information?

    Did I get the wrong set of chips in the mail?

    Don't worry about it. The G.Skill retail part numbers signify the total amount of memory included in a particular kit.

    So say that you buy a memory kit that contains 3 x 2Gb sticks, the G.Skill retail part number will include a "GB6" in it to indicate that this is a 6Gb memory kit.

    Alternately if you purchased a single 2Gb kit the G.Skill retail part number would have "GB2" in it.

    Another example would be a 2 x 2Gb kit, G.Skill's retail part number would include "GB4" in it.

    When buying G.Skill memory you can understand the part numbers like this;

    F1 = DDR
    F2 = DDR2
    F3 = DDR3

    In most cases the next four or five numerical values indicate the rated speed of the memory modules (except for some of their DDR3 16000 ram - which is actually tested to run at frequencies up to 2000Mhz)

    Then comes the "CL" in the part number, whatever the numerical value following the "CL" it indicates the CAS Latency the memory is specified at. So CL6T would mean a CAS Latency of 6. CL7T would mean a CAS Latency of 7 and so on.

    I've already went over the explanation for "GB" so we'll skip that.

    After making sure you have the right physical type of memory (i.e. DDR, DDR2 or DDR3), and choosing a memory speed and voltage that you motherboard supports, some of the most important information is in the very last two alpha characters.

    There will be things like;
    BPIS
    BPID
    NQ
    RH etc.

    I'm not exactly sure how G.Skill chooses these alpha characters, but they tell you something about the ICs being used, their rated speed, voltages etc.

    Anyway, sorry for the lesson in understanding the G.Skill part number scheme. But the bottom line is that you got the memory you ordered, at the correct speed, ram standard, voltage etc.

    Don't worry that memtest says there is a 2Gb memory stick in dimm_A1 because there is Your other 2Gb stick is probably in dimm_B1 etc.

    Right now the most important thing is that they pass Memtest

      f3-12800cl9-2gbnq is correct. When identifying memory, it detects from a single module, so each module is f3-12800cl9-2gbnq. Together they make f3-12800cl9t-6gbnq.

      Thank you

          You're very welcome. It all makes sense when you understand their part numbering schema.

          Take care.
