Well, the 333 strap should work.....................

Maybe it's time for the "old memory" + BIOS update that you spoke of before and start from defaults and then go from there.

    what cpu are you using?

In my second attempt (yesterday) after changing the Frequency, Timings and Voltage I went it the FSB Northbridge strap setting and changed it from "Auto" to "333MHz" No improvement! (It's my son's gaming PC so I only get limited access to try things)
Once we load "default settings" it's stable. Curiously, setting the default within Setup did not cure the boot up problem... "overclocking failure", yet F2 to load default did!

    Your continued support is appreciated.

Have you attempted to change the memory straps (FSB Strap to Northbridge) or are you still working strictly off of the FSB and memory multipliers?

'fraid that didn't work. Set DRAM frequency to 1333, 8-8-8-24, 1.5V
Wouldn't boot on first attempt, gave "overclocking failure" on 2nd, F2 to load default settings..which work!!
I think I'll go back to the old memory and update the BIOS and try again.

    GerryJ,

The 1333Mhz is the intel/mfgs. design spec., but all good boards will do 1600Mhz easily. Overclocking the CPU FSB speed is how you get there If it couldn't be done there wouldn't be any reason to make or sell DDR3 1600 speed RAM.

    Simply set it to DDR3-1333 8-8-8-24 1.50V.

You can up the CPU FSB speed to 1600MHz to match the memory by setting it to 400. This is what wevsspot was talking about. Once you do this, you can operate the memory at DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 1.50V.

    Thank you

    Thanks wevsspot.
If my motherboard is only spec'ed for 1333 do I not have to adjust the memory settings down to that speed? Surely I can't up the FSB speed above 333 (1333)?
I can live with lower speeds for now! Want to get it stable first.

Clear your CMOS and then reset the BIOS to factory defaults.

    Reboot

You will need to adjust your FSB frequency in order to achieve DDR2 1600 speeds. Since by default this is a FSB 1333 mother board you will need to increase you FSB from 333 up to 400 in order to achieve DDR2 1600 speeds.

On socket 775 boards adjusting the memory frequency is achieved by adjusting the FSB Frequency in combination with the FSB Strap to Northbridge setting. Changing one, will affect the other.

    The available FSB Strap to Northbridge settings on your board are;
    [Auto], [200Mhz], [266Mhz] and [333Mhz]

started a topic ASUS P5E3 Memory settings

    ASUS P5E3 Memory settings

I just bought 4GB of DDR3 ram, F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ, for my ASUS P5E3 mobo.
On power up I get "overclocking failed" press F2 to load default.
It works after pressing F2 but I get this on every boot up.
The rated FSB is 1333 but the memory is rated at 1600... is this a problem?
Please advise on the optimum BIOS settings for this RAM.
    Thanks
Working...
