  • RAM for Optiplex 980

(NOTE: I did try the configurator first, but it doesn't work (Firefox or IE). I can put in ?desktop? but then the other two dropdown boxes don?t work. And when I search on Optiplex 980 nothing comes up.)

I just ordered a refurb of this system (not here yet) and it currently has 2GB of 240-pin DDR3 1333 PC10600. I want to chuck that and put in 8GB in two banks (reserving the other banks for later expansion).

According to Dell, this MOBO takes up to 4GBX4 of dual channel RAM. I am assuming one of these memory kits (listed at newegg.com) will work for me?

    G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL

    G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model F3-10600CL9D-8GBSQ

    Does PC310666 vs. PC310600 make a difference?.

Second question. If I keep my 2GB and add another 2GB, putting these in the second bank (total of 12BG), would that be a problem?

    Thanks

    Bob

    well...

Configurator doesn't work, no answer here, looks like I better try a different memory brand.

      Sorry for the delay.

The G.Skill F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL is the kit you want to go with. The 8GBSQ is laptop memory.

PC3-10666 and 10600 does not make much of a difference. Most systems can handle both as they are both DDR3-1333.

You can try mixing memory, but I can not guarantee you that they are 100% compatible since we do not produce the other chips.

      Thank you
