  • BEST SET UP FOR ---- F3-17600CL7Q-8GBPIS ---- i7 870 ---- GA-P55A-UD4P

    Hello expert,

I have overclocked the i7 870 beyond 4GHz and now is running at 4.05GHz with the RAM at 2208MHz and XMP on. RAM voltage set at 1.66v, BCLK at 184 and Multiplier at x22. Core voltage at 1.36v (MAX. at 100% loaded).

I have been testing this setup in PRIME (with various voltage settings). At 1.36v MAX, core temps are around high 70c and low 80c in average. Every time the system runs pretty well before 1.25 to 1.5 hours and after that fatal error occurs (one or more workers stopped working).

I would like the system to run with trouble free at PRIME at least for 2 hours (if possible, higher CPU speed as well).

So G SKILL EXPERT, which setting is the best for my system?

    Thanks!

Also, these RAMS have been tested on P55A-UD4P at G Skill correct?

    Thanks.

Yes, they are definitely compatible. What QPI/VTT Voltage are you using? Do you have your CPU cooler installed properly? Your CPU temps are reaching max which may also be the reason for instability.

      Thank you

        GSKILL,

        QPI/VTT set to AUTO
        CPU VCORE set to 1.3375v
        DRAM to 1.660v

and the rest are AUTO in Advanced Voltage settings.

Cooler system is Corsair H50 in Push-Pull setting. This Corsair H50 is a new replacement. Previously, I had another one which was 10c hotter than this one (in 100% loaded condition). So I guess the first H50 was defected.

I have done many research and they say i7 870 generates tons of heat and mid 80c and low 70c for a overcloced cpu (beyond 4GHz) is ok for that.

What else do I need to twist?

        Thanks.

QPI/VTT can not be AUTO for DDR3-2200. Set that to 1.50V. You can try lowering til it is unstable. You will want the lowest stable voltage possible since this voltage directly affects CPU temperature.

Are those temps under full load? or no load? You'll want to stay away from temps that high.

          Thank you

            GSKILL TECH,

I have set the VTT voltage to 1.5v as suggested. However, at 1.4v, it is a bit stabler than others. At this setup, it can spend an hour at PRIME without and problem.

Please take a look at the bio date and let me know what needs to be changed:

Sames as before in PRIME, it runs well within an hour but after that, 1 or 2 workers "NOT RUNNING".

Thanks for the new input. Will try and see.

Forget to ask you: what is tWR?

I changed the speed back to 2196 MHz. BTW, is it the default speed (not 2200 MHz exactly?)?

Anyway, this thing has passed small FFTs test (2+ hours) but not large FFTs test. What does it tell me?

Write Recovery Time, this can cause major instability if set too low.

No, the default speed will not be exactly 2200 because your system is based off locked multipliers.

184 x 12 can only equal 2208. If you go down to 183 x 12, that can only equal 2196. You can try other multipliers to see if you come even closer to it, but you're wasting your time. This memory package will have no problems with +100MHz with the rated specifcations, so even if you set it to DDR3-2300, you should not have a problem at all. That is of course if your CPU is stable for that frequency.

Which leads us to your problem... try increasing QPI/VTT Voltage to 1.50V and see if that will stabilize the system.

                        Thank you

Or you can lower the frequency first, then work your way up so you have a better idea of what actual voltage is necessary for DDR3-2000+

                            Thank you

Still couldn't find a stable setup at 4.048GHz with 2208MHz ram speed.

In addition, Albert (G Skill) told me that my board does NOT support this RAM and asked me to update my board to UD5 and UD6 instead (that is depressing....). I always think the UP4D is a pretty good board and can hold very high speed ram. However, he suggested me to change the CPU ratio to 17, QPI/VTT to 1.35-1.4v and CPU to 1.25-1.3v and that means CPU will run below 3.3GHz.

                              Any better suggestion?

At the moment, I found this setup below can hold up to 1.5 hours at PRIME large FFTs test:
