  • Bluescreens and other problems on Asus P7P55D-E Pro

Model of the motherboard: Asus P7P55D-E Pro
    Model of the memory: F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH
Model of the CPU: Intel Core i5 750

I started by installing Windows 7, and I have pretty much been having issues in the form of bluescreens, "Windows has recovered" messages and crashes in various applications since then. I was using the default BIOS setting for the RAM timings, but running the extended test in Windows memory diagnostic tool overnight did not reveal any errors.

Eventually the bluescreens and other issues got so bad that I was basically locked out of Windows. I couldn't boot into safe mode without crashing, and the startup repair tool would complain of being unable to access a memory location. I decided to try and reinstall Windows, but setup would stop in the 'expanding features' stage with a file read error. I did a full scan of my hard disk with the manufacturer's tool, but there were no problems.

Next I ran Memtest 86+ with both DIMMs inserted. This produced around 100 errors, on tests 3 and 7, I believe. Testing the DIMMs individually, and in either socket, revealed no errors, so I decided to try and install Windows 7 with only one DIMM inserted. That worked without issue. I decided to see if I could get the other DIMM working, but plugging it in immediately led to the cycle of bluescreens.

After reading on this forum, I decided to set the timings in the BIOS to 7-7-7-24-2N and the voltage to 1.6V. This time, running Memtest 86+ with both DIMMs produced no errors. I then reinstalled Windows 7, which worked fine. When I turned on the computer today, however, the bluescreens were back, although I didn't test whether Memtest 86+ was showing any errors. The configuration had not changed in any way, however. What could the problem be? I'm starting to think I maybe suffer from the cold boot issue too. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you for the reply. It does indeed sound like I've joined the club. Before I RMA the sticks, I just wanted to confirm that this problem couldn't be caused by running the RAM at 1333 MHz, as opposed to the rated 1600 MHz?

With the XMP Profile enabled, you should not have any issues, so simply try that for a definitive answer. Different RAM frequencies is not likely to be the culprit.
