I have installed 2x(2x2G) 8GB total.

Maximus III Gene BIOS 1202

but when I start the system it only uses 4088 MB mem? Is this setup supported?

Indeed it is, make sure you firmly press down on the memory modules after you insert them. The way the memory slots are designed, many times one side may be slightly popped out.

Also, if you simply enable the XMP Profile, it should automatically be able to detect and set memory settings for you.
