  • 8gb of f3-16000cl9d-4gb, ga-ma790fxt-ud5p, phenom 955

hi, i have 8gb of f3-16000cl9d-4gb installed in a ga-ma790fxt-ud5p with a phenom 955 BE cpu and my pc will not run stable with the full 8gb. (my cpu, its the 955 black edition, according to cpu-z its stepping 2, revision RB-C2, so that would be HDZ955FBK4DGI)

i have since read issues on the phenom ii cpus having trouble with more than 1 stick of ram on a single channel. i did not realise the issues with the amd chip's memory controller before i bought the ram and i was wondering if i could get some pointers on what settings may help me with a stable machine running the full 8gb.

the problem is blue screens, lots of them and totaly randomly. sometimes on boot, sometimes once i'm in windows. the blue screen errors are mostly different, but the most common ones are memory related. as soon as i'm only running 4gb, i have no problems. i have tested all 4 sticks of ram and there are no errors popping up on them.. i can run either pair entirely stable, but once both pairs are installed, the issues begin.

    my full specs are:

    gigabyte ga-ma790fxt-ud5p F8c bios
amd phenom 955 black edition with zalman cpns9700
    8gb (4x2gb) g.skill trident 2000mhz (f3-16000cl9d-4gb)
    e-power xscale 570w psu (ep-570mp)
512mb xfx 8800gt xxx with thermaltake duo orb
antec 900 case (lots of air flow)
    windows 7 ultimate x64

i have tried changing the following:

ram at speeds of 800/1066/1333 (wont post at 1600)
setting ram timings manually even at stock speeds
    cpu nb voltage
    ddr3 voltage: 1.65 - 1.8v
    cpu nb vid: +0.100 - +0.0375
    cpu vid: 1.375 - 1.4v
    ganged/unganged
    interlaced enabled/disabled
    different power supply

i was a bit wary about raising the voltages higher, but thats just random people's opinions scaring me out of risking my cpu.

i had tried setting the timings manually as rated on the packaging (9-9-9-27) but windows would not even boot.

i have tried different variations of everything i could think of with no luck. the only thing that has worked to achieve stability is to only run 4gb ram.

i have read of a few people saying 'sure i run 8gb ram, just up te cpu nb voltage' and others have said they have overclocked the nb to run stable with higher clocked ram, but they never give specifics. meanwhile i'm just pulling my hair out.

once again, i realise its a problem with the cpu memory controller, and probably not the motherboard or ram, but i think this is probably a good place to start.

i have run memtest on the system, once with each matched pair of ram installed individually and once with all four sticks of ram installed.

when each pair was run individually (i.e. 2 sticks installed) i had no errors on either pair. when all four sticks were installed however, i had lots of errors on test #5.

if anyone has any advice, i'd greatly appreciate it.

by the way, i'm not in any way expecting to run the ram at the rated 2000mhz, i would be happy with 1033mhz.

Set memory frequency to DDR3-1333. Use tCL 8 - tRCD 8 - tRP 8 - tRAS 24 - Command Rate 2. Memory Voltage 1.60V. NB Voltage 1.40V HT Voltage 1.40V. Let me know how that goes.

      Thank you

ok, i just tried that, it gets through the win7 loading screen and then just as the windows desktop is about to load (i.e. 'loading windows' screen appears with the busy mouse cursor), a blue screen quickly pops up and the computer restarts before i get a chance to see what the blue screen actually says. previously i would only get about halfway through the win7 boot process before it would bluescreen and reboot.

i'm going to run memtest on each pair of ram individually again just to check there is nothing wrong with it.

I believe your specific revision CPU is unable to operate 4 sticks. You will need to verify that with AMD.

            don't give up so quickly!

being pretty stubborn i decided to have a bit more of a tinker after i posted that. i used the settings you gave above, but then also overclocked the NB to 2200mhz. i then ran memtest overnight.

woke up this morning, 3 consecutive tests of memtest passed (about 6-7hrs of testing), i'm now in windows, typing this as prime95 is churning away and have had no bluescreens! i'll run prime95 for quite a bit longer to ensure i have stability now.

            so:

            DDR3-1333
            tCL 8
            tRCD 8
            tRP 8
            tRAS 24
            Command Rate 2
            Memory Voltage 1.60V
            NB Voltage 1.40V
            HT Voltage 1.40V
            NB Clock 2200mhz

thanks a lot for your help! i really appreciate it!
