  • updating memory question

    Motherboard EVGA Z77 FTW
    CPU Intel i5 2500K
    RAM 2x4GB Ripjaws 9Cl
    OS Windows 8.1

Overclocked and running stably at 4.4 GHz for over a year

I do large backtracking computations and recently have gotten "Out of room" notices after several hours of computation. Would like to double the memory in the hope this will get me a little further in the research. Two questions. There are two ways I can do this: buy a Ripjaws 2x8GB Cl9 dual kit to simply replace the two modules in there, or buy another Ripjaws 2x4GB to populate the four memory slots on the MB. Want to take advantage of the Black Friday sales to save a little on the upgrade.

I believe it is a bit faster to only have the two slots occupied. If so I am willing to buy the 2x8GB dual kit since speed is of paramount impportance on computations that may run for days. Is it likely I can just swap them in for the modules in there at the moment. The memory is not overclocked. The DRAM frequency is 800 MHz
