  • AMD FX-8350 - G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-1866C9D-16GXM on Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2.0

OK.. This is my first build, I am putting together the following:

    AMD FX-8350
    ASUS Sabertooth 990fx R2.0
    G.Skill F3-1866C9D-16GXM (8GBX2)

when I install the memory as instructed by the mobo user manual, in slots A2 and B2 the mobo bios only shows total Memory 8GB (it shows that it recognized both sticks) but if I install them on slot A1, B1 the mobo bios shows total Memory 16GB.

when I do just one stick in each slot this is what I get:

B2 -- Mem LED stays up and BIOS doesnt start
B1 -- Mem LED stays up and BIOS doesnt start
    A2 -- BIOS starts and shows 8GB (8175MB)
    A1 -- BIOS starts and shows 8GB (8176MB)

    I also tried:
    Timing 9-10-9-28
    Voltage 1.5V
I have no idea what to do :??: any suggestions????

It looks like the memory B-channel of the CPU or MB is dead or has some other problem.

Using MemOK! does not change that?
The bios is up to date?

when I go into the BIOS it does show that there is a second stick installed but the total memory is still 8GB.

Mem OK does not fixes the issue. I also reseated the CPU and that did not fix it.

I was worried that this memory would not be compatible with this CPU/Mobo even if the g.skill website said it was, so I went and try to find post that showed this set up working and this is what I found:

this gives me hope, I am glad I got the board through amazon prime less than a month ago, I submitted the RMA request last night and the new mobo is already in the mail ETA tomorrow. I hope it is the board because I got the CPU from SuperBiiz on march and I would have to go through AMD RMA process.

One quick question, I noticed that there is a little of thermal paste on the sides of the CPU (I guess from the removing and putting back) do you guys think that would interfere or might cause this issue?

      I will keep you posted...

Usually thermal paste is non-conductive. So even if some paste would actually get on the pins it shouldn't cause any issues. It does not hurt to remove it though, now that you have the opportunity.
