  • F3-14900CL8Q-16GBZM wont work @1866 on GB 990XA-UD3

Hello G.Skill community , I'm new here and I need some help or advice regarding the new ram kit I got it's 4x4 F3-14900CL8Q-16GBZM .
Previously I was using half of this kit F3-14900CL9Q-16GBZL ( only 2 sticks) they were running fine @1866 OCed just with the 1st profile of XMP from the bios and nothing else.
But I wanted more and a bit faster ram so I got myself this kit but the trick with the XMP isn't working anymore, nor when I try with the multiplier.
The PC fails to boot and bios suggests restoring default values or to enter it and fix the stuff I changed.
    My rig is:
MB: GB 990XA-UD3 rev.3, running FD bios version.
CPU: AMD FX8320 @4Ghz OCed with just the multiplier from the bios.
    PSU: Seasonic M12II-750 .
GPU: GB GTX980 G1Gaming stock clock.

    Any suggestions?
Also I'd like to say that I've read a few topics about OCing, but it's safe to say I'm a newbie in that matter.

Did you configure the RAM in BIOS?

    DRAM frequency, timings, and voltage?

You may also need to boost the CPU-NB Voltage to stabilize the CPU memory controller. Try +0.15V and see how it works.

I only tried the XMP profie, and when it failed I didnt do anything else.
I tried what you suggested and it worked, I guess 990XA can run that ram model on @1866 too, too late though. I bought an Asus Maximus Vii Hero and an I5-4690K , there wont be any more problems with ram modules I was sticking to amd for too long. I liked the raw power of having 8 cores running at 4ghz with ease, but the amd build lacked the gaming performance I need, and I feel it bottlenecks my GTX980. Anyway thanks for the nice advice, and the great products you make

What RAM are you using in the new build?

That's going to be an awesome gaming system, best combo you can buy right now.

Im gonna be using this ram http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-14900cl8q-16gbzm Im still waiting for the cpu and mb delivery, then we'll see what OCing can be made on the ram kit, I'll probably need help again.

Yea, you'll def want to try an get the DRAM Frequency as close to DDR3-2400 as you can. It does wonders for that motherboard and CPU.

Hello again. I got the new mobo and cpu running apart from looking freaking awesome, the mobo has a billion features and settings that I dont understand. What and how should I change to come closer to what you suggested ? The MB has this MemTweakIt software where you can change 6 different tabs with different Timings settings, from Timings #1 to #6, I have absolutely no clue what to do.
I apologize if this is not the place to ask such questions. For now I will just activate the intel XMP profile to use some basic 1866 speeds, until I get some guiding.

On the ASUS Maximus VII Hero all you need to do is enable the XMP.

Did that, Im now using the 2nd profile in XMP . Very happy with the results , from 250 to 450fps in League of Legends for example (something the FX8320 could only dream of). In the future I'll probably look for some specialist who knows how to OC stuff and tune up the CPU , GPU, and RAM some more.

XMP is all you need, so if that is stable, everything is ready to go.

Its stable, voltages and temps are excelent, the CPU cooler is corsair H110 with 2x 140mm NoiseBlocker BlackSilentPRO PK-2, 1200rpm , purrrring like a kitten, also I got a 5 fan NZXT controller, contrilling 1 front, 1 bottom (MB controlled), 2 top (the radiator ones) 1 on the side and 1 on the back, still the whole case (Corsair C70) is fairly silent. I also used some "Auto tune" feature in the Asus AI Suit , that automaticaly , and "safely" , OCs the CPU , calibrates the fan speeds, and power saving options. It got me 13% OC on the CPU now running stable at 4.2GHz. Intel best choice ever, Asus MB also. Thanks for the help everyone, I won't be spamming the thread any more, unless something catches fire , lets hope it doesnt. Have a nice day!
p.s. One last question, the CPU coolers pump is connected to the CPU fan header, thats correct right? (just to be sure) Otherwise PC wont boot if there is nothing connected to the CPU header.

                        That is correct.

Usually you'd want to connect the radiator fans to the CPU & CPU_OPT header (mainboard controlled) and the pump to one of the SYS_FAN headers (and disable fan control for it). Unless you want to control the fans via Corsair LINK of course, but the manual for the H110 should cover that.

I may try that, and the pump with disabled control will run at 100% all the time I guess? Wont that stress it?
