  • Additional Ram Upgrade question

    Hi.

    I currently have:

    Mobo: Maximus IV Gene-Z
    Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL (2x4GB) DDR3
    CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K

    Nothing is overclocked.

I would like to add an additional 16GB (2x8GB) of ram to my current setup. [for a total of 24GB] Buying a single larger kit is unfortunately price prohibitive for me : (

It seems the general consensus is any additional ram kits aren't guaranteed to play nice, but I would at least like to have an educated chance of them doing so. I truly have no idea what I need to buy. If you good people could help me out I would be forever grateful : )

If you're looking for a 2x8GB kit and want to increase your chances of both kits running together, get something with similar specifications like F3-2133C11D-16GZL. However you probably will have to run both kits with the XMP settings from the larger kit, since it might need more relaxed secondaries.

    Best of luck!

Hey Thanks for your reply emissary42 : )

I like the look of your suggestion. I was only looking at the 'X' range as that's what I already have, So I figured I would need to stick within that. Thanks for your expertise, I really appreciate it. If no one has any objections, in the next few days I'll place my order.

Hey, while I'm here. The heat spreader on one of my existing modules has sprung open on one side. I've tried pressing it back onto the chips but it just pops up again. I presume those things are there for a reason but I'm not sure how to fix it. Its been like that for a fairly long time now with no obvious ill effects. So maybe I don't really need to do anything about it.

Manual settings would be best. Hopefully they can work together.

For the heat spreader, we can send you adhesive to fix that, or you can send them in for RMA exchange and we will send you new RAM. A good time would be after you have 16GB working well in the system. They may not work well together so RMA may be necessary anyway.
