I currently have G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM in my motherboard. I'm wanting to double the memory by placing another identical set. Is there any reason why using 4 dimms would cause me trouble?

It is not guaranteed two separate kits can work together in the same system. Slight changes with each batch can cause compatibility issues, but hopefully they match well enough for 8GB to be stable. Or you can purchase an 8GB kit for guaranteed results. The 4GB kit can be kept as back up or sold on a third party website.
Thank you
