  • F3-14900CL8D-4GBXM + F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL + Asus P8P67 EVO

    Hey again.

I needed more ram and ordered a 2x4gb F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL kit.

I know mixing sets are not a good idea but originally I was going to retire my old F3-14900CL8D-4GBXM 2x2gb set to another machine but that's not an option anymore so I'll try to use them both.

    The kits in question are:
    1866 F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL 9-10-9-28-2n @ 1.5v
    1866 F3-14900CL8D-4GBXM 8-9-8-24-2n @ 1.6-1.65v

Which timings do you think I should try these first ? Initially i thought i can try 4 sticks at 9-10-9-28-2n @ 1.6v and hope they hold it there. I dunno how flexible the 2x4gb kit is. The reason using 1.6v is that I know 4 sticks usually need a bit more juice, also 2 sets being 4gb. Technically both sets should do 9-10-9 at 1.5v but i don't think im that lucky.

My first choice was actually 2133 F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM 9-11-10-28-2n @ 1.65v but they are not available :/ I'm sure i could achieve 1866mhz 9-10-9-28-2n @ 1.5v along with my old set 12gb in total

you "should" be able to get 1866, might try 10-10-10-28-2n @1.55V and see if that works. I would get them up and running at 1866 and then dial in voltages/timings after. See if they will work together or not. This is about as jack up a pair of sets as possible, different timings, different capacities, different rated voltages... Do make sure the sets that are the same are in the same color slots, not beside eachother.... ie. 1-3 and 2-4 slots

They'll probably arrive on Tuesday. At least the red color will help to discern them In the EDO days, I used mixed rams, putting the slowest to the first slot would make the mobo to use the same timings for all. I'll do the same, reds 1-3, blues 2-4.

        Update:

I had a quick memtest, nothing was wrong. 9-10-9-28-2n @ 1.6v holds for now. I have a very reliable test too. Since i'm using an AMD video card, if the ram is unstable, the CCC.exe crashes immediately after desktop loads. It did not crash first time booting into Win7 Ultimate x64 sp1. Plus, the event viewer is filled with services crashing, none so far.

        Here are some pictures:

Left is the old set alone.

The setup is as I mentioned before, The new set is on 1-3 and the old are in 2-4 slots.

The cpu fan sits on the first slot but it doesn't matter, the fan is not bolt on, it squeezes in I can remove easily.

Something looks "off" the bandwith went down by adding 8 gigs? Does it show 12 gigs in windows or?

Bandwidth went down slightly because of the less tight timings, but i would say it looks ok to me (and maxxmem clearly shows 12gb).

Yep I lost my mind there for a minute on the ammount. Still would have expected slighly improved bandwith, but obviously that isn't the case . Glad they are playing nice together!

Yep, those scores are within margin of error. I can show you a lower score with the previous set or a higher one with 4+8gb. The latency can also be sub 50 sometimes. There's nothing big running in the background but just FDM icon, logitech profiler and Averquick (avermedia remote) which are passive. I got PrivateFirewall thou it's not big of a system hog like other ones (Comodo etc)

And I checked the scores and this 1866 8-9-8 kit is a bit faster than a 2133 on regular timings. And I only have a mildly overclocked 2500k here Since I'm not doing any image and video work, it would be waste of performance if overclocked further, because I got a mid-range 1.5 gen old video card. (I'm counting R7 & R9 as half as they are mostly re-branded 7000 series)
