  • Looking to G.Skill for my X79 RAM upgrade

Hi everyone. I'm going to be upgrading my system very soon, I've chosen to go with G.Skill RAM and I basically wanted some input on RAM kits. I currently have an ASUS Rampage IV Extreme X79 motherboard with an i7 3820 and 8gb of RAM from a corsair x58 setup which appears to be incompatible as it causes random lockups (I have a thread on the ASUS ROG forum re this.) I am also currently studying games development and really need about 32GB of ram and would prefer this to be with 4 sticks incase I want to upgrade to 64GB later. I have also been considering 64GB kits straight up for the use of a RAM Drive.

So basically I have been wondering what G.Skill kits would be best that would cause me the least amount of trouble for this motherboard, keeping in mind that I plan to upgrade to a 4930K at a later date.

The Kits I have been looking at are:
    F3-17000CL11Q2-64GBZLD
    F3-19200CL10Q2-64GBZHD
    F3-17000CL11Q-32GBZLD
    F3-2133C10Q-32GXM
    F3-2400C11Q-32GXM

Thanks for any help in advance

    Do you really want 64GB?

    If so, then

is the best out of these kits performance-wise. However it can be a bit problematic at times to get this amount of memory running at those speeds. After the planned cpu upgrade, this is probably no longer a thing to worry about. So, if you really don't want to fiddle with BIOS settings right now, it might be a good idea to instead go with one of the lower clocked kits (F3-1866C10Q2-64GZM / F3-2133C10Q2-64GZM or if you prefer red heatspreaders F3-17000CL11Q2-64GBZLD).

      F3-2133C9Q-32GTX

      F3-2133C9Q-32GXH
Should both be doable and absolutely fly, if u werent doing the game design stuff i would say either were way overkill and may still be, but they will give you stunning speed and should both be able to kick up a notch or two when you upgrade (especially the tridents)

Lol not trying to step on your toes emissary was typkng that before you had posted lol

I only really need 32GB, the 64 was just an optional thought. I don't mind playing with bios settings to get things to run. I've read some people have trouble running over 1866 so I did kind of expect to play around a little in there. I can get the F3-2133C9Q-32GXH quite cheaply so it may pay to go with those and just get a decent SSD with the rest of the money.

          @supahos: All good, man =)

For 16GB i'd personally go with F3-2133C9Q-32GTX, but the RipjawsX are a fine piece of kit too.

Actually I can get the F3-2133C9Q-32GTX for a little more but still cheap enough. May just go with those being they are 4 sticks instead of 8.

Both are only 4 sticks (if you're looking at the right set) seems to be a $50 difference on newegg. The tridents are more cutting edge, and the ripjaws just flat work. I have a cheap set of ripjaws and have been able to run them faster than rated, or at lower latency than rated with no major modifications. Either set should be fine for what you need now, the Tridents may be better for after you upgrade. Guess it depends on what $50 means to you at this point in your life.

I swear the tridents were $399 earlier when I looked right now

would be a no brainer unless u know somewhere cheaper. $339 for 32 gb of tridents at 2133, yes please

Right you are, my mistake, I must have misread the description. I'm actually from Australia so I'm not sure I can purchase from new egg. Both kits are around the 400 mark here.

You're right they only ship to US,Canada, China (other two are separate websites) Didn't know that when I reccomended it Sorry for showing you a better deal you can't take lol.

On a second note newegg has spoiled me, was trying to look for a deal for you on AU sites, and meh selection is iffy on most and sorting is 100x less helpful than places here. You guys need one of the big boys to show up and start an AU site!

And it should blow away anything you throw at it. If you need help when it comes in we'll be here, but it SHOULD just be a drop in, enable xmp and work kind of deal, however with those chips I'm sure you can tweek them above spec if you so choose

Heck I have half the memory, OCed to get to 1866 and an i5-3350p, and sometimes I load a bunch of crap just to sit back and think holy hell that loaded up quick. I can't imagine what your system will be capable of.
