  • Tighten timings on F3-12800CL9D

Okay I'm completely new to this, but figured I built my first rig in a few years and might try to beef it up a tad

ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

    Intel Core i5-3350P Ivy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.3GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 69W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80637i53350P

    2 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-

I realize having 2 diff packs of memory to get to 16 isn't ideal for bumping the memory, but figured I'd give it a try. It all works at correct timings and at 1600 MHz just using the xmp profile. been in system about a week and a half and is very stable and cool so I'm not opposed to a little voltage jump. My question is even when I turn nearly everything to manual I can't adjust the timings, they are there to be altered but whenever I change one it goes back to 9. what am I doing wrong and if I get that part figured out what settings other than trying to drop the first 9 to 8 and 1n should I change?

    update

Okay so I went back on my lunch break and tinkered with it learned 2 things:

    1) i'm a noob, the settings I input stay if I use the arrows to get to the next box, if I click with the mouse they reset.

    2) after several tries at 8-8-8-24-1 with bsod results I tuned it down to 8-9-9-9-24-1 and it at least let me get cpu-z and real temp installed so its at least more stable.

I bumped the voltage to 1.6 volts and went back to work with memtest running first two tests (4% complete) showed no errors. as I said earlier I'm kind of new to this, but is 1.6v too much for this memory? or can I leave it there indefinitely?

It will be just fine. You can run up to 1.65V easily without a problem.

actually went back into the setting and dropped voltage back to 1.5 with the 8-9-9-9-24-1 timings and its been stable for 5 days solid. Was rather impressed that worked considering I'm using a mixed set (2 2x4gb sets). Was pleased when I got what I was supposed to out of the memory, even happier to get something slightly better than spec out of a mismatched set!

Got bored managed to get it to run seemingly stable at 1866 at 10/10/10/27/2 timings, everyone says the few MHz don't matter but I do think it loads into games quicker, had a friend whom used to get in at same time as me I know I beat him in by a few seconds every time now. Tried dropping to 9/10/10/10/2 and it wouldn't stay stable (BSOD) tried 1.550 voltage and it still bsoded so I left it at listed timings.

            EDIT:

Interestingly enough that push was enough to push my windows 7 experience rating to the max of 7.9 lol
