  • Various settings deformed DDR5 memoory

I recently purchased a new desk top custom build computer from microcenter. I initially purchased 64 GB of DDR5 memory. I decided to add an additional 64 GB of DDR5 memory. So I ordered the memory and found the voltage were different from 1.25 to 1.35. The CL was different as well. The original memory is CL 40 - 40 89 what i received is CL 28-34-34 89.

When I purchased the addition memory I didn't realize there were different settings. Before I add the additional memory to my desktop computer I want to know if these different settings have an impact on my system? Are they compatible?

There are some potential issues with that:

    1. Compatibility between two kits, even of the same type, is not guaranteed. The QVL is only valid for single kit usage.

    2. Even with two matched kits, your motherboard might still not be able to utilize their performance profile [without reducing memory frequency], due to hardware limitations.

    3. With mismatched kits, the motherboard does not see a performance profile shared by all modules. So the setting might be greyed out = no longer available. That would leave you with the option to either use defaults, or manually overclock the memory. If you are dealing with different IC types, the latter might be a challenging task.

Decide for yourself if it is worth the hassle or you'd rather return them. It basically comes down to: How badly do you need the additional memory capacity right now?

Larger UDIMM sizes are expected to eventually be available later this year.
