  • Please help choosing the right DDR4 64GB (2X32) kit for 5950X

    Hi all experts,

I would like to build the system that support Unraid with VMs sever on miTX platform and it should be stable enough to run 24/7 without any issues. My platform consists of
    - AMD Ryzen 9 5950X
    - ASUS X570 ROG STRIX-I GAMING Motherboard
    - AMD Radeon Pro WX 5100 GPU
    - 64GB of DDR4 ???? (Not make decision yet)

I would like to play safe so my plan is to OC my Unraid sever to its maximum stable limit which should be at 1900MHz FCLK/ 3800MHz MCLK, since at 2000/4000MHz seems pretty rely totally on luck.
But I still have a reluctance on which G.Skill 64GB (2 x 32) DDR4 kit I should base on. And there are only 3 available high capacity DDR4 options from G.Skill 64GB kits

    1. G.Skill Trident Z Neo 64GB (2 × 32) DDR4 3600MHz CL16-22-22-42
F4-3600C16D-64GTZN, (G.Skill QVL has my Mobo).

    2. G.Skill Trident Z Neo 64GB (2 × 32) DDR4 3800MHz CL18-22-22-42
F4-3800C18D-64GTZN, (G.Skill QVL has my Mobo).

    3. G.Skill Trident Z Neo 64GB (2 × 32) DDR4 4000MHz CL18-22-22-42
    F4-4000C18D-64GTZN, (No G.Skill QVL).

The email tech support suggested me that the 1st [3600/CL16] option is best. However at Newegg price scalping made this kit out of reach for my budget >$400 while the the 2nd [3800/CL18] & 3rd [4000/CL18] options are still within under $400.

In general I should go for 4000/CL18 because it is in a higher bin than the 3800/CL18. But the problem is my mobo is not in the G.Skill QVL of the 4000/CL18, thus the DOCP profiles might not work on my mobo, so manually tweaking might be needed, in contrast the 3800/CL18 DOCP profiles should work well with my mobo since it's in the QVL.

Could any of you guys please recommend me which one (2nd or 3rd) I should go for, or I should wait for the 1st [3600/CL16] price to come down, since it's a sweet spot for Ryzen 5950X.

    Thanks you in advance.

Any one will be fine, if DDR4-4000 is unstable or if you prefer not to tweak, you can set it to a lower DRAM Frequency with DOCP enabled until the system can run smoothly. It can work the same like the lower frequency kits, which is definitely a better buy if price is cheaper.

      Hi, Thanks for your suggestion.

Newegg has recently restocked the Neo 64GB 3600/CL16 kit at the same price as the 4000/CL18 and it within my budget. Would you please make a final decision for me which kit should I go for before it will be sold out again.
(I will manage run my system at 1900 FCLK/3800 MCLK, CL16 with DOCP enabled).

Your prompt reply would be very appreciated.
      Thank you so much.

If you don't mind manual BIOS adjustment then you can go with the DDR4-4000 kit. If you prefer using DOCP only, then DDR4-3600 kit is best.
