  • Compaq SN1610NX

    Have a Compaq SN1610NX with MSI MS-7184 motherboard and 256mb stick original - PC3200U-30330 DDR 400 CL3.

    Bought G Skiill 1G F1-3200PHU1-1GBNT PC-3200 DDR

Doesn't matter which slot I put it in, with or without the original stick, we get beep-pause-beep-pause-beep continuous on startup. Original stick alone works fine.

Are there BIOS or other settings that need to be changed for the new memory? Or is it just bad to begin with. I do not have other units to test it in.

Might check that you have the latest BIOS, if so I'd set the BIOS settings to factory default with the old DRAM installed, turn it off, install the new stick, then see if it lets you into BIOS and if so set the timings/voltage per spec and see if that works....

Pls offer comments on support I provide, HERE, in order to help me do a better job here:

I'm guessing the BIOS is original, but I'll check that out and see whether it helps.

      Thanks!

Well, crossing fingers didn't seem to help any.

Memory settings in the BIOS are greyed out. They show the 256mb stick in the first slot, but I can't get the cursor to those settings and I don't see anything else. Restoring defaults didn't seem to change that.

I did update the BIOS from 3.35 to 3.47 which appears to be "current" (03/03/2006).

Also, tried the new stick in each of the slots, just for kicks. No luck there either. Same beep-pause sequence immediately on hitting the on switch.

          Other suggestions?

Could try removing all sticks, reset the CMOS (either w/ mobo jumper or remove CMOS battery for a minute or so) and then install new stick in slot 1....if that doesn't take, am guessing either mobo just doesn't like the stick or possibly a bad stick

              Well, that didn't work either.

New CMOS battery. Tried booting numerous ways, each time resetting the CMOS by removing the battery for a while and putting it back in:

              - no memory (same POST beep-pause-beep error)
              - new stick in any slot (same error)
              - old memory works fine

Guess it goes back and I'll see if they can recommend something different.

Thanks very much for your assistance!
