  • Lighting Control 1.00.17 Run at startup without UAC prompt [GUIDE]

Due to necessary changes in Lighting Control to fix security issues, v1.00.17 will now give a UAC prompt when starting after Windows loads. Obviously this can get annoying. Here I will show how to bypass this prompt through the use of Windows Task Scheduler. This is actually very simple to do. This also can be done with any program you wish as needed and not just G.Skill Lighting Control.

NOTE: This assumes your Windows user account has Administrative privileges. I've no idea how to make this work with a limited account. Sorry. Google may help you.

NOTE 2: Undo these changes before updating to a newer version (delete or disable the task).

DISCLAMER: DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. While this *should* be completely safe, I accept no responsibility if you break something.

WARNING: NEVER DISABLE SYSTEM-WIDE UAC. This can cause all manner of odd issues with programs and even Windows itself which may only be fixable by formatting / reinstalling the operating system!

    --------------------------

Step 1 - Close the program before continuing: If running, close the Lighting Control program.

Step 2 - Disable the standard Lighting Control startup item: Open task manager (ctrl+shift+esc), go to Startup tab, right click Trident Z Lighting Control Hid and disable.

Step 3 - Open Task Scheduler: Click the search button and type task, and you should be able to find it there. Alternatively, right click the start button, click RUN, enter taskschd.msc

Step 4 - Create a new folder for your custom tasks: On the left side, right click on Task Scheduler Library and create a new folder. You may name it whatever you like, however I suggest "Skip UAC Prompt" for the purposes of this guide and to make its contents obvious.

Step 5 - Create a new custom task: Right click on Skip UAC Prompt (your new folder) and "Create Task"

Step 6 - On the General tab: Enter a name for the task (such as G.Skill Lighting Control Skip UAC) and if you like also a description. Set "Run only when user is logged on" and check "Run with the highest privileges". Set "Configure for" to your version of Windows.

Step 7 - On the Triggers tab: Click New and set the following - Begin the task On Startup. One time. Check only Enabled, uncheck everything else.

Step 8 - On the Actions tab: Click New and set the following - Action: Start a program. Set Program/script to the path of the program you want to run, in this case it should be "C:\Program Files (x86)\G.SKILL\Trident Z Lighting Control\hid.exe" (include the quotes) unless you have changed the installation folder. You can use the Browse button to find it if needed.

Step 9 - On the Conditions tab: Nothing should be checked here. You may set the task to only start if running on AC power if you wish, but this option is mostly for notebooks.

Step 10 - On the Settings tab: Check Allow task to be run on demand. Uncheck everything else. On the bottom box select "Do not start a new instance". Click OK. With your folder selected on the left, you should now see your custom task in the middle pane.

Step 11 - Test your custom task: Right click on your new task and Run. If the program loads as normal and without a UAC prompt, you are finished. You may also want to test by rebooting. Lighting Control should now load on boot with no UAC prompt. If not, you did something wrong. ;-)

    --------------------------

You may also create a shortcut to run Lighting Control (or any other program) on demand through Task Manager as manually launching the program with a normal shortcut will also have a UAC prompt. That is beyond the scope of this post. Search on Google for "create elevated shortcut without uac prompt" and you should be able to find the information you need.

Thank you and hopefully this helps.
