  • G.SKILL (F3-14900CL9Q2-32GBZL) Compatibility

Hi everyone, my name is Sean and I'm new member to your forum. I hope you guys don't mind, but I really need a little help with something.

I am in the process of building my very first computer which consists of:

CASE - NZXT SWITCH 810 BLACK

MOTHERBOARD - ASUS RAMPAGE IV EXTREME

    PROCESSOR - Intel Core i7-3930K

CPU COOLER - Corsair Hydro Series H100

VIDEO CARD - ASUS GTX570 DirectCU II graphics card

    MEMORY - G.SKILL (F3-14900CL9Q2-32GBZL)

    SSD - Intel 520 Series 240 GB SATA 6 Gb/s 2.5-Inch Solid-State Drive (X1)

HDD - Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB (X2)

POWER SUPPLY - Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 1050W

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PLEASE excuse me but I'm a newbie at this so I must ask someone

The PROCESSOR states: Memory Types---DDR3-1066/1333/1600 and Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) is 64 GB.

The MOTHERBOARD states: 8 x DIMM, Max. 64GB, DDR3 2400(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory, Quad Channel Memory Architecture and Supports Intel? Extreme Memory Profile (XMP).

    The MEMORY states:
    Specification
Quad Channel Memory Designed For Intel X79 platform
    Intel XMP 1.3 Ready
    System Desktop
    System Type DDR3
    M/B Chipset
    Intel X79
    CAS Latency 9-10-9-28-2N
    Capacity
    32GB (4GB x8)
    Speed DDR3-1866 (PC3 14900)
    Test Voltage 1.5 Volts
    Height 40 mm / 1.58 inch
    Registered/Unbuffered Unbuffered
    Error Checking Non-ECC
    Type 240-pin DIMM
    Warranty Lifetime
Features Intel XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) Ready.

My question is, considering the speed of the memory is 1866 and the specifications of the Processor is rated up to 1600, Do you think that I would have any compatibility issues with this system, or would everything be OK due to the specs of the Motherboard?

Any help that you can give will be very much appreciated, Thanks again.

On the CPU specs that is put out by Intel the manufacturer and they don't advocate OCing, so what they suggest is the base spec for the CPU, in this case DRAM at 1600 (which is somewhat ironic as they advertise and built the CPU as unlocked for the express purpose of OCing), regardless, these OC quite well (as do all their unlocked CPUs), your mobo shows the specs that it can handle and most often will even specify if a CPU OC is required to run a certain freq of DRAM i.e. in your example it shows DRAM of 2400 or 2133 will require a CPU OC by the " (OC) " next to the freq. With your selection of components there should be no problems, I would suggest however, if looking for 32GB you might consider a 4x8GB set instead of the 8x4GB like the F3-14900CL10Q-32GBZL in 1866 or even the F3-17000CL11Q-32GBZL in 2133......with 4x8GB you place less stress on the MC (Memory Controller) and still have 4 open slots if you ever decide to expand, it cost a little more, but in the long run may well be worth it

      Thanks To You

Thanks for your reply and advice, I can get a set of G Skill F3-(12800CL10Q-32GBZL) what do you think about that?

What would be the difference between me using :

      [ RipjawsZ ] F3-12800CL10Q-32GBZL (8Gx4)

      Specification
XMP Ready for 3rd Generation Intel Core Processors and Z77 platform
      System Desktop
      System Type DDR3
      M/B Chipset
      Intel Z77 / X79
      CAS Latency 10-10-10-30-2N
      Capacity
      32GB (8GB x4)
      Speed DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800)
      Test Voltage 1.5 Volts
      Height 40 mm / 1.58 inch
      Registered/Unbuffered Unbuffered
      Error Checking Non-ECC
      Type 240-pin DIMM
      Warranty Lifetime
Features Intel XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) Ready

      and

      [ RipjawsZ ] F3-17000CL11Q-32GBZLD (8Gx4)

      Specification
XMP Ready for 3rd Generation Intel Core Processors and Z77 platform
      System Desktop
      System Type DDR3
      M/B Chipset
      Intel X79 / Z77
      CAS Latency 11-11-11-31-2N
      Capacity
      32GB (8GB x4)
      Speed DDR3-2133 (PC3 17000)
      Test Voltage 1.5 Volts
      Height 40 mm / 1.58 inch
      Registered/Unbuffered Unbuffered
      Error Checking Non-ECC
      Type 240-pin DIMM
      Warranty Lifetime
Features Intel XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) Ready

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to the difference in speeds, is it that I would be able to OC the (F3-17000CL11Q-32GBZLD) a lot more than the (F3-12800CL10Q-32GBZL) ?

Would I be able to OC the (F3-12800CL10Q-32GBZL) at all or would it be running on maximum with the system that I'm building?

      Thanks again, I'm just learning.

I'll start from the bottom, the 1600 sticks, would prob OC to +/- 1866 with out a problem or excessive voltage, on the otherhand the 2133 set is native 2133 under XMP (or can be manually set up as I prefer) and can underclock with tighter timings to near same performance level and should probably OC up to +/- 2400 or so, again with minor voltage adjustment....just as an example in GB sec what you might see with the 2133 set is in the area of:

        @ 1600 about 20.6
        @ 1866 about 24.8
        @ 2133 about 26.4

so with the different frequencies speeds you might see roughly 2GB sec diff between the freqs (have a Z77 due in today and hope to have built and do some testing up to 2400 anyway w/ a 32GB set of 2133/CL9 by the weekend).

        Hope this helps

          Much Thanks Again

Thanks again Tradesman, armed with this knowledge I will be a able to make a good decision depending on how crazy I want to get with the OC. Thanks again bro.
          Thanks for your time
