  • ASUS P5Q3-Deluxe F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (4 Sticks)

    Hi There G.Skill People!

    First thing's first...

    Motherboard: ASUS P5Q3-Deluxe
    BIOS: 2105 (26/05/09) - Latest
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Q9550
    RAM: F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (2 sets of 2 x 4GB)

Problem: When the mobo has all 4 slots populated, no post.

Testing I've done: A set in slots A1 & A2 works. Swapping sets also works so I don't think there's a problem with the sticks. I haven't done a MemTest however... this is similar to a problem I logged and RMA'ed them. Got the new ones back and the exact same problem existed

I took the MB specs in with me to a local (reputable) computer chain and asked for RAM that would work reliably, and that would allow me to use the full 16GB that it's capable of taking. Oh and preferably G.Skill (due to the help you guys have given before). Here are the specs from Asus.com:
    4 x DIMM, max. 16GB, DDR3 2000(O.C.) / 1600 / 1333 / 1066 MHz, Non ECC, un-buffered memory
    Dual channel memory architecture
Supports Intel? Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
*Refer to www.asus.com or this user manual for the Memory QVL(Qualified Vendors Lists).
** DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1600, it is suggested to use one DIMM per channel
***When installing total memory of 4GB capacity or more, Windows? 32-bit operation system may only recognize less than 3GB. Hence, a total installed memory of less than 3GB is recommended
**** It is recommended to install the memory modules from the orange slots for better overclocking capability.
The rep gave me the above set, as they no longer stock the models that are on the QVL (it's now a bit out of date). He said they should work fine.I have not had any luck with more than 2 slots filled.

Right, now because I'm a stickler for details (and a reasonably quick typist) here's my current BIOS settings. Feel free to cut & paste them in any response so I know what to change!

I'm not interested in overclocking.. I'd just like to get the system working with all slots populated.

A few people (myself included) have had similar issues, and there never seems to have been a final resolution.

If I manage to get this up and running, I'll update the other posts to point here.

    Hoping you can help!

Hmm... may have found an issue:

    From asus.com:
Chipset: Intel P45/ICH10R with Intel? Fast Memory Access(FMA) support.
    From gskill.com (RAM specs):
    M/B Chipset: Intel P67 / Intel Z68
Is this a deal breaker? It does work with two slots populated :P

Biggest issue is the older chipset and weaker MC, will want FSB up to 1600 to run sticks at 1600, base timings and since there are two sets will prob have to raise DRAM voltage ( + .05 to + .1) as well as raise NB voltage till stable - could also try at 1333 with 8-8-8-24 timings....in both cases will want latest BIOS

Pls offer comments on support I provide, HERE, in order to help me do a better job here:

Thanks for the quick response TM.

FYI, I have the latest firmware.

Using the following settings, I was not able to get a POST with 2 sticks. I've only included options I've changed from the above:
        Code:
        Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
        FSB Frequency [400]
FSB Strap to North Bridge	[400 MHz] <-- As 'Auto', 'DRAM Frequency' changes to 'DDR3-1601Mhz' (Also fails to POST)
DRAM Frequency [DDR3-1600MHz] <-- Also tried 'Auto' (Fails to POST)
        ...
        DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
         1st Information : 7-9-9-24-4-78-10-5
          CAS Latency# [9 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay	[9 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# Precharge [9 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# Activate to Precha	[24 DRAM Clocks]
        ...
DRAM Voltage [Auto] <-- Didn't change as trying to get working with 2 DIMMs before going to 4
NB Voltage [Auto] <-- Didn't change as trying to get working with 2 DIMMs before going to 4
        ...
Following your suggestion, I manually set it to 1333 with 8-8-8-24 timings which worked for 2 DIMMs, but not 4. Settings as follows:
        Code:
        Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
        FSB Frequency [333]
FSB Strap to North Bridge	[333 MHz]
        DRAM Frequency [DDR3-1333MHz]
        ...
        DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
         1st Information : 7-9-9-24-4-78-10-5
          CAS Latency# [8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay	[8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# Precharge [8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# Activate to Precha	[24 DRAM Clocks]
        ...
        DRAM Voltage [Auto]
        NB Voltage [Auto]
        ...
To try to get all 4 working, I changed the DRM & NB voltages... however still no POST with 4.
        Code:
        ...
        DRAM Voltage [Auto] <-- Tried values 1.5 (default), 1.52, 1.54, 1.56, 1.58, & 1.6
        NB Voltage [Auto] <-- Tried 1.1 (default), 1.12, 1.14 & 1.16
        ...
I think a new mobo may be on the cards, but it's all a bit fristrating when someone else on the board seems to have got a more or less identical setup working here: http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=4621

Once again, thanks for your help so far

One of the 'Ai Overclocker Tuner' options is 'X.M.P.'. As it has this on the DIMM, is this something I should be using?

(Sorry for all the info & questions. Just trying to give you all the info you might need)

Give the XMP a try, think may still need to raise NB voltage, also on the 1333 try NB voltage @ 1.22

Tried X.M.P. No POST with 2 DIMMs.
              Code:
              Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
               Profile Information : 1600MHZ-8-8-8-24-1.50V
eXtreme Memory Profile	[Profile #1] <-- This is the only profile selectable (unable to create them)
              ...
NB Voltage [Auto] <-- Also tried up to 1.20V
              ...
Went back to manual from X.M.P. Tried back at 1333, raising the NB voltage up to 1.22 as suggested (I also reset the CMOS back to defaults just in case I'd made a change somewhere ages ago)
              Code:
              Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
              FSB Frequency [333]
FSB Strap to North Bridge	[333 MHz]
              DRAM Frequency [DDR3-1333MHz]
              ...
              DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
               1st Information : 7-9-9-24-4-78-10-5
                CAS Latency# [8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay	[8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# Precharge [8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# Activate to Precha	[24 DRAM Clocks]
              ...
              DRAM Voltage [1.60]
              NB Voltage [1.22]
              ...
Two DIMMs are fine. Four DIMMs = no POST.

I'm open to more suggestions, and I'm scouring the web for other people's memory issues with the P5Q3-Deluxe. If I find anything, I'll be sure to post here :/

Closest thing I could find was at 1333, 16 GB and the only real diff was NB up to 1.34, tRFC was at 88.

No joy with the following settings with 4 x 4GB:
                          Code:
                          Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
                          CPU Ratio Setting [Auto]
                          FSB Frequency [333]
                          PCIE Frequency [100]
FSB Strap to North Bridge	[333 MHz]
                          DRAM Frequency [DDR3-1333MHz]
                          ...
                          DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
                           1st Information : 7-9-9-24-4-78-10-5
                            CAS Latency# [8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay	[8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# Precharge [8 DRAM Clocks]
DRAM RAS# Activate to Precha	[24 DRAM Clocks]
                            RAS# to RAS# Delay [Auto]
Row Refresh Cycle Time	[88 DRAM Clocks]
                          ...
DRAM Voltage [1.60] <-- Also tried 'Auto'
NB Voltage [1.34] <-- Text changed to yellow. Not sure what that means
                          ...
I think this is one for the too hard basket unfortunately. I'm unable to get 2 sticks running at anything greater than 1333MHz, and for all the good 4 sticks does me I may as well be plugging donuts into my board.

FYI, I blame the board. From what I've read it's notoriously finicky with memory.

Thanks again for your help. I'll keep buying G.Skill for the foreseeable future

I'm going to drop a note to GSkill Tech to have a look come Mon or whenever they get back, imagine they may have some info on file, hopefully on Monday but know they've been on some projects that have had them tied up the last few days.

Unfortunately many older motherboards may have slight BIOS issues with the newer standard memory.

                              Try RAS# to RAS# Delay [6]
Row Refresh Cycle Time [128 DRAM Clocks]

                              1st Information should be: 8-8-8-24-5-128-10-6

                              Those are the precise settings.

                              Thank you
