  • 2 kits of same memory not compatible

    MOBO:
-ASUS M4A78LT-M (AMD 760G chipset), latest BIOS (0802)

    CPU:
-AMD Athlon II 645 QuadCore (3.1Ghz)

    RAM:
    -8GB KIT 1: F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL8-8-8-24 1.5V, Manufactured 2011 Apr
    -8GB KIT 2: F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL8-8-8-24 1.5V, Manufactured 2011 Sep

All DIMM slots on MOBO work, All RAM sticks work, MOBO does not POST when different kits are combined. I tried each kit on same bank, different banks, various 8GB configurations with the 2 kits, and manually configured the BIOS to the point that my system halts due to over-voltage (because of anti-surge protection on ASUS boards?).

I have been following the instructions on the boards for a week now and no success.
Even my brother thinks I'm crazy now watching me test memory, full power down, swap memory, power on, test memory, full power down, ...

    Any suggestions?

If not, am I allowed to RMA the 2 kits in exchange for a single 16GB kit of DDR3-1333 or 1600 RAM?

off topic, but what is the best ratio configuration (cpu-nb-ram) for my system?
am I better off with 1333 or 1600?
    I would like a "clean" ratio (example: something like 1 : 4 and not 1 : 2.332133...)

With 16 GB you may want to try them at 1333 8-8-8-24....it's possible they are wanting to play with each other, which often can be fixed by raising DRAM and CPU/NB volatge, but in this case I guess the CPU can't carry 16GB at 1600 because of the Memory Controller (MC)

What are the limitations of the MC of my CPU?
Does the Phenom II Quad/Hex cores also have this issue?

How do I set my RAM to run at 1333 or lower?
There are not options to directly set the RAM speed.

Generally 1600 on anything less than a 965 Rev C is hit or miss, and even with that 4 sticks (especially 16GB) can get problematic. There's a sticky for setting up 1600 sticks here

and generally includes raising DRAM voltage and CPU/NB (and on occasion vCore)

You can manually set your DRAM speed/freq to 1333/667, the base timings to 8-8-8-24 (or maybe 7-7-7-22), DRAM voltage to 1.55 and CR (Command Rate/Timing) to 2N.

As far as the MC itself, AMD has long had a history of weak MCs, they have CPU's that'll run 1066 and some that run 1333 max but only 1 stick per channel, others can run 4 sticks but may top out at 1066 or 1333, many won't run 1600, the newer ones are better but the MC is still weak compared to Intel....AMD seems to use the MC as one of their cost cutting points to keep prices low.

I had high hopes for the just released Bulldozer line but after playing with a FX-8150 (which is native 1866 for DRAM) I'll continue to stick with building only on Intel (gave up building AMD about 4 years ago, except for a few clients). The FX-8150 is close to a 2500K, but doesn't perform or OC as well and cost about $35 more.
