  • MSI 790FX-GD70 16GB (4 x 4GB) F3-10666CL7D-8GBXH combo

I am trying to get 16gb of F3-10666CL7D-8GBXH ram to work on a 790FX-GD70. The 4GB sticks I'm using are working perfectly at 7-7-7-21 @ 1.5v when only using 2 of them for a total of 8GB. It's when I try to fill up all 4 dimm slots that I get a problem. The computer will boot with the recommended settings, but when I reboot, the system hangs and I have to power down then free up 2 dimm slots to be able to boot again. I read a post about the amd memory controller limitations and I'm unsure if that includes my motherboard, but it would not surprise me seeing as I'm having problems rebooting with 16GB. I've tried upping the voltage a little and still no luck. The highest I went was 1.54v. Will I have to lower my speed from 1333 mhz in order to use 4 dimms?

    Current build specs:

MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard

    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL7D-8GBXH

    AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGIBOX

    SAPPHIRE 100259L Radeon HD 4870

In all honesty, I question why you need to run 16GB of memory.
8GB is plenty, even for heavy duty video or audio encoding work.
I'm afraid I'm going to be the bearer of bad news regarding your 955.
That model of the 955 is C2 Stepping, which has a very weak IMC (Internal Memory Controller).
In other words, it's next to impossible to get a stable system with all dimms populated.
The later C3 Revision Denab CPU's can usually handle most memory modules with all dimms populated.

In a nut shell, be happy with a 2x4GB setup and forget about trying to run 4x4GB's.

Well, that put a damper on my mood. It seems like there's always a surprise lurking around the corner when installing new parts. Thank you for your help though, it is much appreciated. I'm indeed happy with the 8 gigs of ram's performance, just wish the 16 gig setup would have worked with the cpu I have. I just bought a capture card and the ram is going to be used in conjunction with video editing and of course gaming. I really feel like AMD needs to switch my cpu out for free now. I looked on their website and I don't see any details about C2 and C3 specs for their processors. How am I to know which processors have the improved stepping and which ones don't?

        C2 Denab - weak IMC
        C3 Denab - good IMC
        Thuban X6 - better IMC

Upcoming Bulldozer X8 - rumored to have a strong IMC

Try raising CPU-NB Voltage +0.1V. 16GB in that memory spec should be capable with that motherboard and CPU.

          Thank you

Contact AMD support, they may be willing to switch out your C2 955 for a C3.
