  • Asus Sabertooth X58 and F3-12800CL9T-12GBRL

    Hello,
i just bought new components for my machine that decided to die on me. my old asus amd board is currently being RMA'd so i figured i'd upgrade.
    Specs:
    Sabertooth X58 (0603) latest Bios
    F3-12800CL9T-12GBRL (12 Gig, 4x3gb, triple channel)
    XFX HD 5770, 1Gb
    WD VelociRaptor 600, Sata 6G/s

anywho, the problem i have encountered is same as a few other people, my motherboard is only recognizing 8 of the 12 Gig of Memory in the Bios and in Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.
The only different is that CPU-Z sees all of the 12 Gigs in all 3 slots. Also Speccy shows it as 12 Gigs, but states that 2 are used and 4 are available, but sees memory in Slot 1, 2, and 3.
CPU-Z shows the memory running at PC3-10700 (667mhz), and speccy shows the same. INel Extreme Tuning Utility shows it is using Bank 0 and bank 4. i have had it show up as using Bank 0 and Bank 2.

I have tried the recommendations in:
    http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=5136
    http://i4memory.com/ramdetect

i have tried XMP mode, Auto, Manual. IN Manual i have set the CPU to stock, have tried upping the voltage from auto to memory to 1.5 up t 1.64. The QVN i have set to 1.25 instead of auto, i have changed my timings to match the specs, 9,9,9,24. also the CR to 2 from the default 1. in these settings i can always boot as long as i dont overclock the memory over 2000mhz. but CPU-Z never registers past PC10700. I can overclock the CPU just fine, right now i have it at 3.5GHZ, clock changed from 133 to 146, and no stability issues. i dont normally overclock but at this point i have tried overclocking, underclocking, auto everything and nothing is making it go past the 8 gig mark.

Other tests i have done are take all the sticks out and try them one at a time to see if it boots in each slot (A1, B1, and C1). Also i have taken each stick individually and tested each slot by itself. so essentially i ran this test 9 times, to test all sticks and all slots. havent had any problems. even if i only have a stick in C1 it still boots with the 4gig and no problems.

i have had no luck getting the BIOS or Windows to recognize more than 8148MB, i cannot remember right now what it says specifically but its close to 8 gig.

it is now 1 am, and i have been trying this for the past 6 hours, with no results.
outside the memory issue, i have had no stability problems, even under stress testing.

if needed i can post screen shots of configurations, etc.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated. as at this point, i am considering returning both the motherboard and memory and getting a completely different set. Would rather not :-) i like the setup, just want my 12 Gigs to work. :-)
    Thanks again

    Help

If you could post your BIOS settting, would prob help, Gskill should be in in the morning - think Tman is still here but not positive, know he's checking some stuff for me, so may be about off for the evening it's 11:30 here, he normally is gone by midnight.

CPU-z will always show PC3-10700 (667mhz) as max bandwidth. This is the motherboard's standard, not what the memory is operating at. To see what the memory is actually running at, look in the memory tab. It will show DRAM Frequency or real frequency. So DDR3-1600 will show ~800MHz, and the timings should be 9-9-9-24.

Do you have any aftermarket CPU cooler? Did you try reseating the memory? Use an eraser to clean the contacts to see if that may be a problem.

If all else fails, send the memory in for RMA to see if a new kit solves the problem.

      Thank you

it is the stock cooler that came with the i7-950, have tried reseating the processor, have also tried reseating the memory multiple times. at least a dozen per stick by this time. as mentioned earlier in my long post, each stick works individually, its almost as if they are just not working in Triple channel, just dual channel. using banks 0 and 4.

also, you are correct that the CPU-Z shows the operating frequency at around 800mhz.
tried cleaning he contacts on the Ram using an eraser and rubbing alcohol, and no change.

The RMA is a problem as i need the machine running,, i cannot have it be down under maintenance for even a day, let alone a week or however long the process takes. The only way i could RMA this currently is to do an advanced RMA, which i have no problem doing, i have done that plenty of times even with NewEgg, WD, Seagate, Intel, ASUS, MSI, and a bunch of others.

is there an option to do an advanced RMA for this RAM? also, is there a different memory that i should get, as in return this one and get a different set? for the Sabertooth x58?

I will try and post Screenshots of the BIOS settings, the any specific one's that you would like to see? so i dont take up taking 20 pictures of the wrong info :-)
        Thanks again

From looking at reviews on the EGG seems there have been a number of problems like your , most mention the B Channel as being bad and that the sticks will work in the other slots, another thing you might try is disabling the USB 3 controller, apparently that has caused DRAM problems also...it's worth a try

These are the images: Obviously not all combinations, it would have been dozens, or hundreds of different combinations of voltages and settings. i Believe i have the pictures below in the correct order.

i am going to try the USB 3.0 disabling now, i just wanted to get these up.
tried the manual, auto, and XMP settings, nothing has worked. if there are specifics voltages i should be trying, please let me know, i am willing to test anything will post soon.
Thanks for the great help once again.

Think XMP settings you have up might work if you disable SpeedStep and Turbo mode if the USB doesn't help, e-mailed a customer with a Sabertooth we set up like your to see if I can get his BIOS settings.

i started messing more with the individual stick of ram, one at a time in each slot. i basically took 1 stick through all 3 slots to test memory and slot. during each start, i ran a stress test from the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Sticks 1 and 2 passed everytime in a ll three slots. The last stick the first slot booted, but locked up the system within 10 seconds of the stress test. The second slot, just the DRAM Led n the motherboard stayed on. no POST, no boot. Then in Slot C, it just got to the test in the BIOS starup to the amount of memory. never showed an amount and just locked.

So i have to say it is the memory that is faulty. so that was my mistake , should have tested more throughly the first time around,
Thanks for all your help guys, it was greatly appreciated.

one last question, is there a way to do an advanced RMA replacement? or can i just send in the one defective stick? or the whole kit?

                    Thanks again,
