I have 8gb of F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 4x2gb dimm

I have a gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r motherboard.

When I leave it to the default 1066 speed it runs games fine.

When I set it to 1600 using the xmp profile in the bios it just freezes the pc within a matter of minutes playing games.


Help please?

Do you have the latest BIOS? Have you tried manual settings?

Not 100% sure yet. I keep getting results that are spurious. What are the best utilities to test your ram, I use prime95. Is memtest86+ going to give me a more accurate assessment of my ram?

memtest86+ only tests for errors on the memory blocks. Prime95 is actually slightly better as it tests for system stability. Difference is sometimes memtest can pass, but the system is still unstable because of incorrect settings. Whereas Prime95 must have error free memory AND stable settings to pass.
